New Delhi: The Omicron variant of coronavirus proved to be a mild one that did not cause too many severe infections, hospitalisation, and death. Although a variant that spreads too easily, the Omicron wave subsided in India well in time. As a result, many people ended up taking it for granted; although, experts named it a silent killer. Despite mild symptoms and timely recovery, some patients struggled with serious post-COVID repercussions across age groups even 25 days after recovery. Some of the most serious post-COVID symptoms that patients – from children to old adults – reported were:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Sleep problems
  4. Body ache
  5. Heart trouble
  6. Brain fog
  7. Difficulty in breathing
  8. Sleep problems
  9. Muscle pain
  10. Rapid heartbeat
  11. Low mood
  12. Irritating cough
  13. Prolonged weakness

Adults are more likely to suffer from weakness, worsening comorbidities, and brain fog.

Why do patients struggle with post-COVID repercussions?

After recovering from COVID-19, many patients complained of weakness, poor immune system, and a few respiratory woes as well. However, when patients recovered from Omicron, experts blamed its prolonged symptoms on autoimmune processes triggered by the virus. Every patient is likely to suffer a different immune response which is why the post-COVID symptoms differ or all. After recovery, 50-60 per cent of patients can have prolonged symptoms for a period of three weeks or more.

Is there a high-risk group for Covid complications?

The Omicron infection can affect all age groups, yet, the elderly population above 60 years of age is more vulnerable. Additionally, patients with hypertension, heart disease, kidney problems, diabetes, cancer patients, or those on immunosuppressant medicines are more likely to suffer from severe Covid.

Patients with long Covid, stress, depression, or anxiety are also more prone to struggling with prolonged symptoms.

Covid complications in children

A small number of children appear to struggle with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome after recovering from Covid. Additionally, children are also likely to show symptoms like lower back pain, hair loss, anxiety, tingling sensations in the ears, breathlessness, fatigue, and recurring headaches.
