16-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Assaulted Inside Moving Sleeper Bus in Greater Noida; Driver and Conductor Arrested

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a moving sleeper bus in Greater Noida, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over the safety of passengers travelling in private buses. Police have arrested the driver and conductor of the bus in connection with the case and are examining forensic and CCTV evidence as part of the investigation.

The incident reportedly took place on August 4 after the teenager travelled from Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri towards Noida. According to the complaint filed with the police, she had planned to reach a relative's residence in Noida but found herself stranded late in the evening after getting down near Pari Chowk.

The case came to light after the girl approached the police and provided details about the alleged assault and the circumstances in which she was picked up by the bus. Investigators subsequently traced the vehicle and arrested two men identified as the driver and conductor.

Teen Stranded During Heavy Rain

According to the details emerging from the police investigation, the teenager had left her home without informing her family and was travelling to meet her cousin in Noida. She reportedly got down at Pari Chowk at around 9 pm and later realised that her intended destination was still several kilometres away.

The area was reportedly experiencing heavy rain and visibility was poor because of darkness. The girl needed transport to continue her journey, following which a bus approached the area.

Police said the vehicle was a sleeper bus with multiple berths and curtains. At the time, there were reportedly no passengers inside. The conductor allegedly told the girl that the bus was travelling towards Noida Sector 63, prompting her to board the vehicle.

Investigators later found that the bus had actually been returning after visiting a workshop in Greater Noida's Surajpur area.

The circumstances under which the teenager entered the bus and what happened subsequently are now central to the police investigation.

Driver and Conductor Arrested

The accused have been identified by police as bus driver Kuldeep, 39, and conductor Sandeep, 26. Both were arrested from a parking area in Delhi's Timarpur area, according to the information provided by investigators.

Police said the two men had reportedly been working with a private travel company, Vishwanath Travels, for more than two years. Their employment history and other relevant details are expected to form part of the investigation as authorities examine whether there were any previous complaints or concerns associated with the accused.

The arrests were made after the teenager's complaint prompted an immediate search for the bus and the men associated with it.

Authorities have also taken possession of the bus as part of the evidence-gathering process.

Investigation Focuses on Bus Route and Evidence

Investigators are examining the route taken by the sleeper bus and collecting CCTV footage from locations along the journey. Surveillance cameras installed on roads, at intersections and near parking areas could help establish the movement of the vehicle and the sequence of events.

A forensic team has also examined the bus. Police reportedly recovered strands of the teenager's hair from inside the vehicle, which have been collected as part of the forensic investigation.

The presence of curtains around the sleeper berths is also being examined because investigators believe the enclosed design of the vehicle may have made it difficult for people outside the bus to notice what was happening inside.

The authorities are expected to match forensic findings with statements and other evidence collected during the investigation. CCTV footage, mobile phone records and other technical evidence could also assist investigators in establishing the movements of the accused and the vehicle.

What the Police Complaint Says

In her complaint, the teenager reportedly described being approached by the bus after she had become stranded in the city. She said she boarded the vehicle after being told that it was heading towards the area where she wanted to go.

According to the complaint, the situation changed after the bus began moving. The conductor allegedly behaved inappropriately towards her before the teenager was assaulted. She also told police that threats were made against her when she attempted to resist.

The survivor was subsequently left in Delhi, according to the police account. She later approached the authorities, leading to the registration of the case and the launch of an investigation.

Given that the survivor is a minor, authorities are required to protect her identity and handle the case in accordance with laws governing the privacy and protection of children in sexual-offence cases. Her name and other details that could reveal her identity have therefore not been disclosed.
