    Air India Flight to San Francisco Returns to Delhi After Technical Issue Mid-Air

    An Air India flight travelling from Delhi to San Francisco was forced to return to the national capital after reportedly experiencing a technical issue while airborne, according to statements issued by the airline. The aircraft, carrying more than 200 passengers, landed safely in Delhi after remaining in the air for several hours.

    The incident has once again drawn attention to operational safety procedures in commercial aviation, particularly amid increasing scrutiny of airline maintenance systems and passenger safety protocols.

    According to airline officials, Flight AI173 departed from Delhi for San Francisco on May 27 but later returned as a precautionary measure after the crew detected a technical concern during the journey.

    Aircraft Returned Following Mid-Air Technical Alert

    Air India confirmed that the aircraft returned to Delhi in accordance with established operational and safety procedures. The airline stated that the plane landed safely and would undergo a detailed technical inspection before being cleared for future operations.

    Officials did not publicly disclose the exact nature of the technical issue, though reports indicated that the aircraft had already been airborne for several hours before the decision to return was taken.

    Sources familiar with flight tracking data suggested that the aircraft had entered international airspace and was travelling near Chinese airspace before it began diverting back toward Delhi.

    The return journey reportedly extended the total airborne duration to nearly eight hours before the aircraft safely landed back at its departure airport.

    Following the unscheduled return, Air India stated that arrangements were being made to minimise inconvenience to passengers travelling on the long-haul international route.

    The airline said its ground staff were assisting affected passengers with refreshments, hotel accommodation, and rescheduling options where required.

    In its official communication, Air India emphasised that passenger and crew safety remained its highest priority and that all actions were taken following standard aviation safety guidelines.

    Several passengers reportedly remained at the airport while alternative travel arrangements were being coordinated.

    The latest incident comes days after another Air India aircraft operating on a domestic route reportedly faced an engine-related warning during landing procedures in Delhi.

    According to earlier airline statements, the cockpit crew of a Bengaluru-Delhi flight had received an engine fire indication while approaching Delhi airport. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers disembarked without injury after the crew followed emergency operating procedures.

    Though no casualties or injuries were reported in either incident, the repeated technical alerts have generated concern among travellers and aviation observers regarding aircraft maintenance and operational reliability.

    Aviation experts note that modern aircraft are designed with multiple safety redundancies, allowing pilots to respond effectively to technical warnings while prioritising safe landings.
