IMD Forecasts Widespread Rain Across India, Delhi-NCR Placed Under Yellow Alert

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across several parts of the country as the southwest monsoon continues to remain active over northern, central, eastern and northeastern India. A combination of a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and prevailing monsoon conditions is expected to keep rainfall activity strong across several states over the coming days.

The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Several other regions are also expected to receive moderate to widespread showers, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in some areas.

In Delhi-NCR, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, warning of light to moderate rainfall in the national capital and neighbouring areas. The weather conditions are expected to remain influenced by continuing monsoon activity over northwest India.

Low-Pressure Area to Influence Rainfall

The low-pressure area positioned over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to play a significant role in maintaining rainfall activity over eastern and central India. Weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal frequently influence monsoon rainfall across the eastern, central and northern parts of the country as they move inland.

According to the forecast, the current system, together with the broader monsoon circulation, is likely to keep several regions wet over the next few days. The west coast is also expected to continue experiencing a prolonged spell of rainfall.

Central India Likely to Remain Wet

Central India is also expected to witness widespread rainfall. Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are likely to receive showers across several areas, with heavy rainfall possible in parts of the region.

The continuing rainfall is being linked to the prevailing monsoon conditions and the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Weather conditions could remain unsettled through the coming days, particularly in areas located along the path of the weather system.

The IMD's forecast indicates that rainfall activity will not be restricted to a single state, with multiple areas of central India expected to receive showers.

Eastern India Under Rainfall Watch

Eastern India is expected to remain among the wetter parts of the country. West Bengal, Sikkim and Jharkhand are likely to receive widespread rainfall, while Bihar has been warned of heavy showers.

Odisha is also expected to see an increase in rainfall activity in the coming days as the weather system continues to influence the region.

The rainfall forecast comes during the active phase of the southwest monsoon, when weather systems over the Bay of Bengal can bring significant amounts of moisture into eastern and central parts of the country.

Northeast to Receive Heavy Showers

The northeastern states are also likely to remain wet. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

With several northeastern states already prone to heavy monsoon rainfall, continued showers could affect road connectivity and normal daily activities in vulnerable locations. Local authorities generally monitor areas susceptible to flooding and other rain-related problems during periods of intense precipitation.

Thunderstorms and lightning may also accompany rainfall in some parts of the country, making it important for residents to follow local weather advisories.

Rainfall Pattern in South India

The IMD expects rainfall activity over Peninsular India to remain comparatively subdued during the next week. However, this does not mean that the entire southern region will remain dry.

Konkan and Goa are likely to experience widespread rainfall, while Gujarat and Maharashtra may receive scattered showers.

In southern states, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Coastal Karnataka are expected to receive widespread rainfall. Scattered showers have also been forecast over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and other parts of Karnataka.

The distribution of rainfall is therefore expected to vary significantly across Peninsular India, with some coastal and adjoining regions receiving more persistent showers than others.

Fishermen Advised to Avoid Sea

Along with the land-based rainfall forecast, the IMD has issued an advisory for fishermen because of expected rough sea conditions and strong winds across several maritime areas.

Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal where weather conditions are expected to remain unfavourable.

The advisory covers areas along and off the Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts, as well as parts of the Arabian Sea. Warnings have also been issued for the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin area, the Andaman Sea and adjoining parts of the Bay of Bengal.

Strong winds and rough seas can create hazardous conditions for fishing vessels, particularly smaller boats operating close to coastal areas. The IMD's warnings are intended to reduce the risk to fishermen as adverse marine conditions develop.

Delhi-NCR Under Yellow Alert

Delhi and the National Capital Region are expected to experience isolated to scattered rainfall as monsoon activity continues over northwest India.

The IMD has placed Delhi-NCR under a yellow alert for Wednesday, forecasting light to moderate rainfall in the national capital and surrounding areas.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

The rainfall could bring temporary relief from daytime heat, although wet roads, traffic slowdowns and waterlogging may affect commuters in areas that receive heavier showers.

Residents are likely to experience cloudy and humid conditions along with intermittent rainfall as the weather system continues to influence the region.

Monsoon Activity Remains Strong

The latest forecast highlights the uneven but active nature of the southwest monsoon across India. While several northern, eastern, central and northeastern states are expected to receive substantial rainfall, Peninsular India is likely to experience relatively subdued activity in many areas.
