Gold Prices Fall Over 1% as Crude Oil Fuels Inflation Fears; Silver Also Slides

    Yugcharan News / 22-10-2026

Gold prices fell more than 1% on Thursday as rising crude oil prices intensified inflation concerns and strengthened expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer. Silver also recorded sharp losses, while platinum and palladium faced pressure amid uncertainty over the global economic outlook and the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming monetary policy decision.

Investors are closely monitoring developments in energy markets, geopolitical tensions in West Asia and economic indicators from major economies to assess the next direction of precious metal prices. The Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 policy meeting and the upcoming US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report are expected to be particularly important for bullion markets.

According to market data cited by Reuters, spot gold fell 1.1% to $4,094.90 per ounce by 0333 GMT on Thursday, reaching its lowest level since October 14. US gold futures for December delivery declined 0.9% to $4,111.40 per ounce.

The decline reflects growing uncertainty over the relationship between energy prices, inflation and interest rates. Although gold is traditionally considered a safe-haven asset during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, expectations of higher interest rates can reduce its appeal because the metal does not generate interest income.

Rising Crude Oil Prices Add Pressure on Gold

Crude oil prices have emerged as a major factor influencing the outlook for gold and silver. Brent crude has been trading near $110 per barrel amid tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and concerns about regional stability.

Higher oil prices can increase transportation, manufacturing and energy costs, potentially placing upward pressure on inflation. If inflation remains persistent, central banks may be less willing to reduce interest rates and could consider tighter monetary policies.

Such expectations can weigh on gold because investors may find interest-bearing assets more attractive when yields remain high. Rising bond yields can also increase the opportunity cost of holding precious metals.

Market participants are therefore assessing whether the recent increase in energy prices will translate into sustained inflationary pressure. The answer could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next moves and determine whether gold experiences further selling or finds support at lower levels.

Geopolitical uncertainty adds another layer of complexity. Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns about potential disruptions to energy supplies, while uncertainty surrounding US-Iran diplomatic efforts has contributed to volatility in commodity markets.

Gold can benefit from demand for safe-haven assets during geopolitical crises, but the inflationary consequences of higher energy prices can offset some of that support. The competing effects have contributed to an uncertain outlook for bullion.

    Federal Reserve Meeting in Focus

The US Federal Reserve’s scheduled policy meeting on October 27-28 is a key event for investors. Market participants are looking for indications of how policymakers will respond to persistent inflation and changing economic conditions.

According to a Reuters poll cited in the market report, nearly all economists surveyed expect the central bank to leave interest rates unchanged at its October meeting. However, traders are increasingly considering the possibility of a rate increase in December.

The CME FedWatch Tool indicated that markets were pricing in an approximately 90% probability of a December rate hike, while the likelihood of an increase at the October meeting was substantially lower.

These expectations remain sensitive to incoming economic data and statements from policymakers. If inflation proves more persistent than anticipated, investors may expect interest rates to remain high for longer. That scenario could create further headwinds for gold.

Conversely, signs of easing inflation or a reduction in bond yields could provide support to the precious metal. Investors are also monitoring movements in the US dollar, which can influence the price of gold for buyers using other currencies.

The direction of Treasury yields is particularly important because lower yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold. On Wednesday, gold received some support when US Treasury yields declined, allowing prices to recover from an earlier low. However, Thursday’s renewed selling demonstrated that concerns about inflation and interest rates remain influential.

    Silver Suffers Sharper Weekly Decline

Silver has faced greater pressure than gold in recent sessions, reflecting concerns about monetary policy as well as the outlook for industrial demand.

Spot silver fell approximately 3% to $56.22 per ounce in one Thursday update, extending the losses recorded across the precious metals market. Earlier reports during the session placed silver at $56.44 and $57.33 per ounce, highlighting the volatility in prices as trading progressed.

Domestic silver futures have also declined sharply. Contracts on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) lost Rs 14,568, or 6.4%, over the previous week to settle at approximately Rs 2.11 lakh per kilogram.

Analysts have attributed the weakness partly to expectations of higher interest rates and uncertainty over global economic growth. Silver has both investment and industrial uses, making its price sensitive to financial-market conditions as well as demand from manufacturing and other industrial sectors.

A slowdown in economic activity could affect expectations for industrial consumption, while elevated borrowing costs can weigh on investment demand. These factors have left silver more vulnerable than gold during the recent period of market uncertainty.

Nevertheless, analysts have cautioned against interpreting the latest decline as definitive evidence of a prolonged downward trend. Price movements will depend on fresh economic information, currency movements, bond yields and developments in energy markets.

Domestic Gold Prices Affected by Rupee Appreciation

In India, gold prices have faced additional pressure from the appreciation of the rupee against the US dollar. Because India imports much of the gold it consumes, changes in the exchange rate can significantly influence domestic bullion prices.

A stronger rupee reduces the rupee cost of purchasing gold in international markets, while a weaker rupee can make imported bullion more expensive.

According to the market data cited in the report, gold futures on the MCX declined by Rs 3,581, or 2.4%, over the previous week to close at approximately Rs 1.47 lakh per 10 grams. Silver futures fell by Rs 14,568, or 6.4%, to settle at around Rs 2.11 lakh per kilogram.

The rupee had appreciated by 48 paise to close at a provisional rate of Rs 94.43 against the US dollar, with Reserve Bank of India intervention cited as a factor supporting the currency.

The impact of exchange-rate movements means domestic gold prices do not always move in line with international quotations. Even when global prices remain relatively stable, a stronger rupee can reduce domestic prices by lowering import costs.

Analysts have consequently identified currency movements as an important factor for Indian bullion traders alongside crude oil prices, global inflation expectations and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook.

Analysts Identify Key Support and Resistance Levels

Technical indicators are also being watched as traders assess whether gold could experience further declines or begin to stabilise.

Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao indicated that spot gold could test support around the October 14 low of $4,073 per ounce. The assessment was based on a downward target associated with a wedge pattern in the price chart.

On the upside, resistance was identified around $4,135 per ounce. A sustained move above that level could open the way towards the $4,150-$4,169 range, according to the technical analysis.

Domestic levels are also receiving attention. Vikram Subburaj, chief executive of Giottus.com, identified immediate support for MCX gold near Rs 1,45,500 per 10 grams. A sustained move above Rs 1,46,500 could indicate an improvement in near-term stability.

For silver, Subburaj placed a key support level near Rs 2,08,500 per kilogram. A recovery above Rs 2,10,900 could ease some of the immediate selling pressure.

These levels are analytical reference points rather than guarantees of future price movements. Actual prices can change quickly in response to economic data, trading activity and geopolitical developments.

Subburaj advised investors to avoid chasing intraday price movements, maintain measured position sizes and wait for clearer signals from domestic and international markets before making directional bets.

Platinum and Palladium Also Under Pressure

Other precious metals have also experienced volatility as investors reassess the outlook for interest rates and economic growth.

Spot platinum was reported at $1,594.25 per ounce, down 2.1% during one Thursday update, while palladium fell 2.6% to $1,059.05 per ounce. Later figures in the live market coverage showed different price levels, reflecting subsequent movements during trading.

Platinum and palladium have industrial applications, meaning their prices can be affected by expectations for manufacturing activity and demand from sectors such as automotive production. Their performance can therefore differ from gold, which is more directly associated with investment and safe-haven demand.

The broader weakness across precious metals indicates that investors are reassessing the balance between inflation risks, monetary policy and economic growth.

Economic Data to Guide the Next Move

Beyond the Federal Reserve meeting, investors are monitoring a series of economic indicators that could influence bullion prices.

The US PCE inflation report is a central focus because the Federal Reserve uses the measure to assess price pressures. Evidence that inflation remains elevated could strengthen expectations of tighter monetary policy, while softer readings could reduce pressure on the central bank.

Investors are also watching Chinese economic indicators, US housing figures, consumer sentiment, inflation expectations and purchasing managers’ index readings from India, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Developments involving Russian crude supplies and monetary policy signals from other major central banks could also influence currencies, bond yields and commodity markets.

For gold and silver, the immediate outlook will depend on how these factors interact. Rising oil prices may support inflation concerns and keep interest rates elevated, while a weaker dollar or falling Treasury yields could offer some relief.

For Indian consumers and investors, the rupee’s movement will remain an additional consideration when tracking domestic bullion prices. With global economic and geopolitical uncertainty continuing to influence trading, both gold and silver are likely to remain sensitive to fresh market signals in the coming sessions.
