Imran Khan Sent Back to Prison After Brief Hospital Examination, PTI Challenges Move

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was returned to prison early Friday after spending only a few hours at a government hospital for a medical examination, in a development that has triggered strong criticism from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The former premier was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad after the country’s Supreme Court had directed authorities earlier in the week to move him to hospital for medical treatment and examination. However, after doctors declared him medically fit, Khan was transferred back to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi at around 5 a.m., according to Pakistan’s information minister.

PTI has argued that the authorities failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive and said it would pursue contempt proceedings. The dispute has added another layer of tension around Khan, who has remained imprisoned since August 2023 and continues to be a major political figure in Pakistan.

PTI Questions Court Order Compliance

The PTI said the government’s decision to return Khan to prison shortly after his examination amounted to a violation of the Supreme Court’s instructions. Party representatives said they understood the court’s order to require Khan to remain under medical supervision for a considerably longer period.

The Supreme Court had ordered authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days. The order also provided for his examination by a medical panel that was to include his personal physician.

Instead, Khan was taken to the state-run PIMS hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the change was necessary because of a security situation allegedly created by PTI supporters along the planned route to the private hospital.

The PTI disputed the government's justification and argued that both the change in hospital and the absence of Khan's personal doctor represented departures from the Supreme Court's directions.

The disagreement could now move into the courts, with the party indicating that it intends to seek action for alleged non-compliance.

Khan's Sister Raises Health Concerns

Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, was present during his medical examination and later spoke to reporters about his condition. She said the former prime minister appeared stable but had a patch over one eye.

Khan’s health has been a recurring issue during his imprisonment. His lawyers and supporters have previously expressed concern about his eyesight, particularly in his right eye, and have argued that his medical condition has deteriorated while in custody.

His sister also alleged that Khan had told her he had been subjected to repeated mistreatment in prison. These claims could not be independently verified from the information available, and Pakistan’s interior and law ministries, as well as prison authorities, had not immediately responded to requests for comment concerning the allegations.

The government has previously maintained that medical assessments did not show a condition requiring immediate hospitalisation.

The latest examination was particularly significant because Khan had not undergone what his supporters considered an adequate medical assessment since February. PTI members had therefore expected him to remain in hospital for a longer period while specialists assessed his condition.

Government Says Doctors Declared Him Fit

The government offered a different explanation for Khan’s brief hospital stay.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a team of qualified specialists had examined the former prime minister. The medical team included an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a physician.

According to the minister, the doctors concluded that Khan was medically fit and did not require continued hospitalisation. Based on that assessment, authorities returned him to Adiala jail.

The government’s position is that the decision was therefore based on medical advice rather than an attempt to disregard the Supreme Court.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry had also indicated before the examination that Khan would remain in hospital only if doctors determined that treatment there was necessary. If specialists concluded that he could receive appropriate care in prison, authorities could return him to jail.

That interpretation has become a central point of disagreement between the government and PTI.

Change of Hospital Becomes Major Point of Dispute

The decision to take Khan to PIMS rather than Shifa International Hospital has emerged as one of the most contentious aspects of the episode.

The Supreme Court’s directive specifically referred to Shifa International Hospital. Government officials said security concerns surrounding PTI supporters forced authorities to alter the arrangements.

Supporters of Khan had gathered along roads in Islamabad overnight as news spread that the former prime minister was being taken out of prison. Reports said crowds lined the route and threw flowers at a vehicle widely believed to be carrying Khan to the hospital.

The public scenes were notable because coverage of Khan has faced restrictions in Pakistan in recent years. His name was reportedly absent from much television coverage until Thursday night, when the Supreme Court-ordered transfer brought the issue back into public attention.

PTI leaders said the public response demonstrated the level of support that Khan continues to command despite his prolonged imprisonment.

PTI Leaders Warn of Further Protests

The episode could have political consequences beyond the immediate legal dispute.

Sohail Afridi, chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province governed by PTI, accused the authorities of showing contempt for the Supreme Court. He said the developments would increase pressure on the government.

Afridi also referred to preparations for a protest march planned for September 27, saying the latest events were likely to strengthen mobilisation efforts.

Khan remains a powerful political figure despite his imprisonment. His supporters have repeatedly challenged his legal cases and accused the authorities of using the judicial system to keep him away from political activity.

The government rejects the accusation that the cases are politically motivated and maintains that Khan is facing legal proceedings through established institutions.

The continuing disagreement over his treatment in prison has nevertheless remained a major source of political tension.

Three Years Behind Bars

Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 after becoming embroiled in a series of criminal and legal cases following his removal from office.

The former cricket star became prime minister in 2018 but was removed through a parliamentary vote in April 2022. Since then, his relationship with Pakistan’s political establishment and military leadership has remained highly contentious.

Khan has consistently argued that the cases against him are politically motivated. The Pakistani government has rejected that position.

His imprisonment has not ended his influence within PTI. The party continues to campaign around his release and has organised demonstrations and political activities demanding greater legal and political rights for its leader.

The precise interpretation of the court’s order could determine whether the government’s actions are considered consistent with the directive. Any further judicial proceedings could also clarify whether authorities were required to keep Khan hospitalised or whether they had discretion to return him to prison once doctors determined that inpatient treatment was unnecessary.

For Khan’s supporters, however, the controversy goes beyond the medical examination. They view the brief hospital visit and subsequent return to jail as evidence of continued restrictions on the former prime minister.

For the government, the episode is being presented as a routine medical decision based on the recommendations of qualified doctors.

The competing narratives underline the broader political divide surrounding Khan, whose imprisonment continues to influence Pakistan’s political landscape three years after he was first taken into custody.
