NEW DELHI: Chongtham Vikram Singh, a respected Manipuri guitarist and music teacher who had spent nearly two decades building his professional and personal life around music in Delhi, died on Monday morning after he was allegedly assaulted outside his home in the national capital.

Singh, 55, was reportedly attacked late Sunday night after he went downstairs to object to a group of men allegedly creating a disturbance outside his residence. According to details reported by The Times of India, Singh's family said that around eight men, who were allegedly intoxicated, were involved in the incident. He was found seriously injured shortly afterward and died while undergoing treatment.

The incident has shocked Singh's family, friends, students and members of Delhi's Manipuri community, many of whom remembered him not only as a talented musician but also as a gentle and dedicated teacher who had devoted much of his life to developing music and mentoring young performers.

A Life Built Around Music

Singh was originally from Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai in Imphal West, Manipur. His connection with music began in his home state, where he played lead guitar with bands before eventually moving to Delhi almost 20 years ago.

Over the years, the capital became the centre of his musical and professional life. Singh established a music school in Delhi and taught students from his home. He was also associated with the Delhi School of Music, where he contributed as an instructor.

For Singh, music was more than a profession. Friends and acquaintances described him as someone deeply committed to his craft and passionate about helping others develop their musical abilities.

His career also included collaborations with several musicians and cultural projects. He was associated with the Rock'n'Roots project and worked with Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan. He also participated in cultural programmes and concerts alongside other established musicians.

His work allowed him to connect different musical traditions while continuing to maintain strong ties with his Manipuri roots.

What Happened on Sunday Night

According to the account given by Singh's family, the incident began at around 11pm on Sunday when a group of men were allegedly making noise and creating a disturbance outside the house.

Singh reportedly went downstairs to ask them to stop. What happened afterward remains the subject of the police investigation, but his family said that he was allegedly assaulted by the group.

A few minutes later, his son, 20-year-old Yaiphaba, reportedly heard Singh banging on the door and calling for it to be opened. When the door was opened, Yaiphaba found his father in a semi-conscious condition.

His clothes had reportedly been torn during the incident, and he was immediately taken to Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment.

Doctors found that Singh's blood pressure had fallen to a critically low level, reportedly below 50 mm Hg. His condition was described as extremely serious, and doctors were reportedly unable to perform surgery because of the severity of his condition.

Singh died at around 6.30am on Monday.

The circumstances of the assault, including the exact sequence of events and the identities and roles of those allegedly involved, are expected to be established through the police investigation.

Family Struggles With Loss

Singh's death has left his family devastated. He is survived by his wife, Jyotsana, 54, and their son Yaiphaba, who is pursuing legal studies.

His family also includes his elderly parents. Singh's mother, 86-year-old Chongtham Ongbi Kamala Devi, is known as a classical and modern Manipuri singer.

The family's grief has been compounded by the age and condition of Singh's father, Dr Chongtham Birendra Singh, who is 96.

Singh's brother Vivek said that the family had not yet informed their father about the death because they feared that the news could be too difficult for him to withstand.

The tragedy has therefore affected a family with a deep musical heritage, with Singh himself having continued that connection through his own career as a performer and teacher.

Community Demands Justice

The death has also triggered concern among Manipuri organisations and members of the Northeast community living in Delhi.

Manipuri associations reportedly said that although the postmortem had been completed, they did not want Singh's body to be taken back to Manipur until there was progress toward justice in the case.

Community members expressed concern that attention surrounding the case could fade after the funeral and last rites. Activists argued that the circumstances of Singh's death should be fully investigated and that those responsible should face legal action if the allegations are established.

A protest was reportedly held outside Sunlight Colony police station, with Northeast student groups, Singh's friends and family members participating.

The protest reflects wider concerns within the Northeast community about safety, recognition and the need for authorities to respond effectively when members of the community face violence.

Remembered as a Teacher and Mentor

Beyond the circumstances of his death, Singh's friends have remembered him primarily for his contribution to music.

Those who knew him described him as a soft-spoken and accomplished musician who remained closely connected to his profession. His decision to establish a music school and teach students from home reflected his commitment to passing on his knowledge to the next generation.

His association with the Delhi School of Music further expanded his role as an educator.

For many of his students, his influence extended beyond technical lessons. Music teachers often become mentors whose impact continues through the musicians they train, and Singh's long association with students in Delhi made him an important figure within his local musical community.
