An American national has come under the scrutiny of Indian security agencies after being detained while allegedly attempting to cross the India-Nepal border without carrying valid travel documents. Officials said the man was intercepted during routine border surveillance, and an investigation is underway to verify his identity, travel history and the circumstances surrounding his stay in India.

According to officials, the individual identified himself as Jordan Brown, a 36-year-old resident of California in the United States. He was stopped by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near the Sonauli border in Uttar Pradesh, one of the busiest transit points between India and Nepal.

Authorities stated that Brown was allegedly trying to enter Nepal when security personnel asked him to produce valid documents. During the verification process, officials found that he was not carrying the required travel papers, leading to his detention for further questioning.

Senior officials familiar with the investigation said multiple central intelligence and security agencies have joined the inquiry. So far, investigators have not found any evidence suggesting links to anti-national or suspicious activities. However, officials emphasized that every claim made by the foreign national is being independently verified before any conclusions are drawn.

During questioning, Brown reportedly told investigators that he had travelled to Thailand on a tourist visa but lost his passport while staying there. He further claimed that he later reached Sri Lanka by sea and eventually entered India through a maritime route in November 2025.

Police officials said these statements are currently being cross-checked through official channels. Authorities are also examining his previous travel records, immigration history and the sequence of events that led to his presence near the international border.

In a statement, local police confirmed that the American citizen was detained after being found attempting to cross into Nepal without proper authorization. Officials added that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act relating to illegal entry and the absence of valid travel documents.

According to investigators, Brown had travelled from Bengaluru to the Sonauli border before his detention. Officials alleged that when security personnel attempted to verify his identity, he briefly tried to move away from the checkpoint but was quickly intercepted by SSB personnel.

The Sonauli border serves as an important gateway connecting Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district with Nepal's Rupandehi district. Due to the high volume of daily movement, security agencies regularly conduct document verification and surveillance operations in the area.

During the search conducted after his detention, officials recovered cash, multiple mobile phones and several personal belongings. Authorities are examining these items to establish his recent movements and verify the information he provided during questioning.

Reports indicate that investigators are also analysing documents and electronic devices recovered from his possession. Officials have not disclosed detailed findings from the examination, stating that the investigation is still in progress.

Security agencies are reportedly coordinating with various departments to authenticate Brown's nationality, immigration records and overseas travel history. Officials are also expected to seek assistance from relevant diplomatic channels if required.

Authorities have stressed that the investigation is being conducted according to legal procedures. They added that while several aspects of Brown's account are still under verification, there is currently no official confirmation of any criminal or security-related motive beyond the alleged immigration violations.

Officials further stated that the inquiry remains focused on determining how the foreign national entered India, the duration of his stay, and whether all immigration laws were followed during that period. Additional questioning may be carried out based on the findings of document verification and digital evidence.

The case has drawn attention because of the sensitive nature of the India-Nepal border, where security agencies maintain heightened vigilance against illegal crossings, human trafficking, smuggling and other cross-border activities. Officials noted that routine inspections are an important part of maintaining border security and ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.

Authorities have reiterated that the investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released after verification of the facts. Until then, officials have urged against speculation and said any conclusions regarding the case should await the outcome of the inquiry.
