US Deploys Sea Drones in Strike on Iranian Naval Facility Amid Escalating Gulf Tensions

Washington/Tehran: The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified further after the US military announced that it had carried out a strike on an Iranian naval maintenance facility using unmanned surface vessels, marking what officials described as the first operational combat use of American sea drones.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted a submarine and ship maintenance facility located at Iran's Bandar Abbas Naval Base. The military stated that three Corsair unmanned surface vessels participated in the mission, aiming to damage infrastructure that it believes supports Iranian maritime operations.

In an official statement, CENTCOM said the operation was intended to reduce Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping routes in the region. The military added that the attack was conducted using multiple one-way attack surface drones and described the mission as a significant milestone in the use of autonomous naval technology.

The latest operation comes as military exchanges between Washington and Tehran continue to intensify across the Middle East. Over recent days, both sides have reported carrying out strikes against military targets, raising concerns among international observers about the possibility of a wider regional conflict.

Earlier the same day, US officials also announced additional strikes on several locations inside Iran. According to the military, those operations targeted air defence systems, radar installations, missile and drone infrastructure, and other military assets considered strategically important.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump made a series of statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes. He claimed the United States would ensure security in the waterway and announced plans to impose a 20 percent fee on commercial cargo vessels passing through the strait as compensation for maintaining maritime safety. The proposal has drawn international attention because of the strategic importance of the shipping corridor for global energy supplies.

President Trump also rejected reports suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed, insisting that navigation through the waterway would continue despite ongoing tensions.

On the Iranian side, officials have repeatedly condemned the recent US military operations and warned that any further attacks would receive a response. Reports indicate that Iranian forces have continued military activity around the Gulf region, while authorities maintain that they will defend the country's territorial and strategic interests.

The renewed hostilities have also placed the fragile understanding reached between the two countries in June under increasing pressure. Analysts believe that the continued exchange of military action has significantly reduced hopes of restoring diplomatic engagement in the near future.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors, carrying a substantial share of global oil exports. Any disruption to shipping through the passage has the potential to affect international energy markets and global trade.

Governments across several countries are closely monitoring developments as fears grow that continued military escalation could impact regional security, international commerce, and diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a broader conflict.

No independent assessment of the full extent of the damage caused by the reported strike has yet been released, and the situation remains fluid as both countries continue to issue statements regarding their military operations.
