The main accused in the high-profile Baruipur minor murder case died during a police operation in West Bengal after allegedly attempting to escape while officers were reconstructing the crime scene, according to police officials.

Authorities said the accused was taken to the Surjyapur area of Baruipur shortly after midnight on Wednesday as part of the investigation. During the reconstruction, police claimed he attempted to snatch a service weapon and flee. Officers stated that a shot was fired during the incident, prompting them to respond in self-defence. The accused was taken to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police had identified him as one of the principal suspects in the case after CCTV footage reportedly placed him with the victim before the incident. He had been arrested along with two other suspects earlier in the investigation.

The encounter has triggered political reactions. A senior opposition leader questioned the circumstances surrounding the police action, describing it as a matter requiring accountability and transparency.

The accused's mother reportedly declined to claim his body, telling reporters that he should face the consequences of his actions. She also alleged that he had struggled with substance abuse for several years.

Meanwhile, investigators arrested another suspect from North 24 Parganas in a joint operation involving the Special Task Force and district police. Officials said the individual had been absconding since the incident. With this arrest, the total number of people taken into custody in the case has risen to four.

The victim's body was recovered on July 5 after being reported missing a day earlier. The discovery sparked widespread protests in Baruipur, with residents demanding swift action against those responsible. During the unrest, public property was damaged and police vehicles were attacked.

Police also confirmed that a separate individual was killed by a mob during the protests after being suspected of involvement in the case. Authorities later stated that investigations into that incident are also underway.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to examine all aspects of the case. Senior state officials have directed the police leadership to submit a detailed report on the investigation and the events surrounding both the public unrest and the police encounter.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have stated that further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
