Political developments in Karnataka gathered momentum on Thursday as intense speculation continued over a possible leadership transition within the ruling Congress government. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hosted a breakfast meeting with Cabinet colleagues at his official residence in Bengaluru amid reports suggesting that the party’s central leadership may be considering a change in the State’s top leadership.

Although no official announcement had been made at the time of reporting, senior party leaders, ministers, and supporters closely monitored the developments throughout the day. The meeting, attended by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and several Cabinet ministers, triggered widespread discussion within political circles regarding the future leadership of the Karnataka government.

According to party insiders quoted in multiple media reports, the Congress high command has reportedly explored the possibility of shifting Siddaramaiah to the Rajya Sabha, potentially paving the way for a leadership reshuffle in the State. However, Congress leaders at the national level have not publicly confirmed any final decision.

Breakfast Meeting Draws Attention Across State

The breakfast meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence quickly became the focal point of Karnataka politics. Ministers and senior Congress leaders began arriving at the venue early in the morning, while supporters gathered outside the residences of both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

Photographs released by the Chief Minister’s Office showed cordial interactions between the two senior leaders. In one image, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were seen greeting each other warmly, while another photograph showed Shivakumar seeking blessings from the Chief Minister. Political observers interpreted the visuals as a sign of continued coordination within the party despite ongoing speculation.

Sources familiar with internal discussions claimed the meeting was intended to thank Cabinet colleagues for their cooperation during the government’s tenure. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara, speaking to reporters, stated that the Chief Minister had invited ministers for breakfast and wished to express gratitude to them amid the ongoing political discussions.

However, Parameshwara also clarified that there had been no formal communication regarding resignation or transfer of leadership responsibilities.

Congress Leadership Yet to Make Official Announcement

While reports of a possible transition gained traction, Congress leaders continued to maintain caution publicly. AICC General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, urged media organisations and political commentators not to engage in speculation until the party reached a formal conclusion.

Surjewala reportedly met Siddaramaiah and other senior leaders in Bengaluru after consultations in New Delhi earlier this week. Senior Congress figure K.C. Venugopal was also expected to arrive in Bengaluru to oversee discussions and coordinate with State leaders.

Party sources indicated that a meeting of Congress legislators may be convened shortly if the leadership issue moves toward a formal resolution. Some reports suggested that such a meeting could take place within the next couple of days to discuss the party’s future strategy and leadership structure.

Despite widespread political buzz, Siddaramaiah himself avoided directly addressing the issue. During a brief interaction with media personnel on Wednesday, he stated only that he would “speak tomorrow,” fueling further curiosity over the possible announcement.

    Supporters Rally Behind Shivakumar

Outside the residence of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, supporters gathered in large numbers amid expectations that he could emerge as the next Chief Minister if the party decides to initiate a leadership change.

Some supporters distributed sweets and raised slogans in his favour, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities. Several individuals speaking to television channels praised Shivakumar’s role within the Congress organisation and described him as a key figure in the party’s success in Karnataka.

Political analysts noted that Shivakumar has long been considered a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post. Ever since the Congress government crossed the halfway mark of its tenure, discussions regarding a possible rotational leadership arrangement had surfaced repeatedly within political circles.

However, party leaders have consistently refrained from publicly acknowledging the existence of any such agreement.

Governor’s Absence Adds Another Layer to Speculation

Adding further intrigue to the day’s developments, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot was reported to be away in Indore for personal reasons. Officials at Raj Bhavan reportedly stated that the Governor had not yet received any formal request for an appointment from the Chief Minister.

Political observers pointed out that any resignation by the Chief Minister would typically require an interaction with the Governor before being formally accepted. Sources indicated that although resignation documents can be submitted through official channels, constitutional procedure generally involves the Governor meeting the outgoing Chief Minister personally.

The Governor is expected to return to Bengaluru soon, although no exact schedule had been publicly confirmed.

    Rajya Sabha Speculation Continues

Reports suggesting that the Congress leadership may offer Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha seat have further intensified discussions around the future of Karnataka’s leadership. Elections for four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka are scheduled for June 18, and political observers believe the Congress is in a favourable position to secure multiple seats.

Sources close to the developments claimed that the possibility of Siddaramaiah moving to Parliament was discussed during recent meetings between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command in New Delhi. However, party officials continued to officially deny any confirmed arrangement.

If such a transition materialises, it could mark a significant political shift in Karnataka, given Siddaramaiah’s influence within the State Congress and his long-standing role in State politics.

    BJP Reacts to Congress Developments

Meanwhile, opposition leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the Congress over the ongoing uncertainty. BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra reportedly claimed that the internal developments reflected instability within the ruling party.

Speaking to media persons, Vijayendra alleged that leadership disputes had diverted attention away from governance and administration in the State. He further claimed that Karnataka could witness political uncertainty in the coming months, although Congress leaders dismissed such remarks as politically motivated.

Political analysts believe the evolving situation could significantly shape Karnataka’s political landscape ahead of future elections and parliamentary contests.

    High Command’s Role Under Focus

The role of the Congress central leadership has become central to the unfolding developments. Meetings involving senior national leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, have reportedly played a major role in ongoing discussions regarding Karnataka’s future political roadmap.

Sources suggested that balancing factional interests while ensuring stability in the government remains a key challenge for the Congress leadership. Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are both considered influential leaders with substantial support bases within the party.

Observers believe the party leadership may attempt to ensure a smooth transition, if any decision is eventually taken, in order to avoid internal friction and maintain administrative continuity.

    Political Atmosphere Remains Tense

As speculation continues, the political atmosphere in Bengaluru remained tense throughout the day, with party workers, ministers, and media personnel closely watching every development.

Despite the numerous reports and public discussions, Congress leaders continued to insist that no final announcement had yet been made regarding any leadership change in Karnataka.

With further meetings expected and senior leaders continuing consultations behind closed doors, the coming days are likely to prove crucial for the future direction of Karnataka politics.
