Opposition leaders and MPs from the INDIA bloc were stopped by Delhi Police on Tuesday while marching towards the Election Commission office to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demand his resignation. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were among those participating in the march.

The protest march began around 11 am from Makar Dwar near Parliament House as opposition parties stepped up their campaign over the ongoing controversy surrounding electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.

As the leaders and MPs moved forward, police personnel stopped the march near the NITI Aayog office. Following the police intervention, several opposition MPs sat down on the road and continued their protest.

Protesters raised slogans including “Vote chor, gaddi chhod” during the demonstration.

    Heavy Security Deployment in Delhi

Delhi Police had made extensive security arrangements in anticipation of the opposition march. More than 3,000 police personnel were deployed at strategic locations across the capital to maintain law and order.

A total of 31 companies of police personnel were deployed, including four companies comprising women police personnel. A police company generally consists of around 100 to 115 personnel.

Additional security measures were also put in place near major Metro stations, particularly around station gates. Security was strengthened around Parliament House, Parliament Street and the Election Commission office.

Barricades were installed at several locations along the route of the planned march, including roads surrounding Parliament and outside government offices and the Election Commission premises.

    Opposition Objects to Election Commission

The INDIA bloc's protest is focused on demands concerning the Election Commission and allegations related to electoral rolls. Opposition parties have accused the poll panel of failing to adequately protect voters' rights and have raised questions over the functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, while participating in the protest, accused the government of attempting to undermine universal adult franchise.

Kharge alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner was acting under the influence of the government and claimed that such developments could lead to the beginning of authoritarian rule. He said the Opposition would continue its campaign against what it described as injustice.

The allegations made by opposition leaders remain political claims, while the Election Commission has maintained that its electoral-roll revision process is aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of voter lists.

    Protest Continues Despite Police Barricades

The Delhi Police deployment began several hours before the scheduled march. Barricades were positioned along the route to prevent protesters from reaching restricted areas around the Election Commission office.

After being stopped near NITI Aayog, opposition leaders and MPs continued their demonstration from the road rather than dispersing immediately.

The latest protest is part of a broader series of demonstrations by opposition parties against the Election Commission and its handling of electoral rolls. The issue has increasingly become a point of political confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, with the latter demanding greater transparency and accountability from the poll panel.

The developments in Delhi come amid wider protests in several parts of the country, where opposition parties and youth groups have also raised demands concerning voter-list revisions and the role of the Election Commission.
