Protests Intensify Across India as Opposition, Youth Groups Demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

Protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar intensified in Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday as youth groups and opposition supporters stepped up their demonstrations over changes to electoral rolls. Police detained several protesters in the national capital for the third consecutive day amid growing opposition to the Election Commission’s voter-list revision exercise.

In Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray led demonstrations calling for the withdrawal of the voter-roll revisions and demanding that Kumar step down from his position.

The protesters have alleged that changes to electoral rolls could exclude large numbers of eligible voters and benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations that the exercise is politically motivated.

Protests Spread Across Delhi and Mumbai

In New Delhi, protesters gathered in the evening, with some demonstrators detained by police. According to a Reuters witness, some protesters breached police barricades and surrounded vehicles carrying detained demonstrators. A few protesters climbed onto the vehicles and lay on the road in an attempt to prevent them from moving.

Aahna Singh, an activist and political science student at Jawaharlal Nehru University who participated in the protest, alleged that police used force against demonstrators.

Delhi Police had not immediately responded to a request for comment on the allegations.

Police in the capital had already prevented protesters from assembling during the preceding two days. Dozens of people were detained and transported away in buses. Some detainees were subsequently released, while cases were registered against some protesters for allegedly violating orders prohibiting mass gatherings in central Delhi.

The latest demonstrations come amid plans for further protests by opposition parties and youth-led groups.

Opposition Accuses Election Commission of Voter Suppression

The protesters have accused the Election Commission of disenfranchising eligible voters through a nationwide voter-roll revision exercise launched last year. They argue that the removal of names from electoral rolls could affect millions of voters and ultimately benefit the BJP.

The Election Commission, however, has maintained that the revision exercise is intended to strengthen the integrity of electoral rolls by removing duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries.

The poll panel also directed its officials on Friday to ensure that eligible voters who were inadvertently left out of the electoral rolls could be registered.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar has not publicly responded to the demands for his resignation or directly commented on the protests.

The controversy has gained political momentum as opposition parties continue to challenge the Election Commission over the voter-list revision process.

Opposition Parties Plan March to Election Commission

An alliance of opposition parties is scheduled to hold a protest march to the Election Commission's office on Tuesday as part of a campaign that they have described as an effort to "save democracy".

The planned march is expected to add to pressure on the Election Commission amid the continuing dispute over electoral rolls.

Meanwhile, the Gen Z Cockroach Janta Party has announced plans for a major rally in Delhi on October 10, signalling that youth-led demonstrations are likely to continue.

The protests have emerged as another significant political challenge for the Narendra Modi government, which is currently in its third term.

Youth Protests Add to Political Pressure

The latest demonstrations follow a series of youth-led protests and political controversies involving the central government.

In July, student protests over the alleged leak of question papers for a national medical college entrance examination resulted in the ouster of the federal education minister. The episode was described as one of the most serious political crises faced by the Modi government during its third term.

The current protests, however, are centred on the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls rather than the functioning of the Union government directly.

Opposition leaders have argued that the integrity of electoral rolls is fundamental to the democratic process and have demanded greater transparency from the poll panel.

At the same time, the Election Commission has defended the voter-roll revision exercise as an administrative process intended to ensure accurate electoral records and has taken steps to restore eligible voters who may have been inadvertently omitted.

With demonstrations planned in the coming days, the confrontation between opposition groups, youth protesters and the Election Commission is expected to remain a significant political issue. The demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation has also added a new dimension to the broader dispute over electoral rolls and the conduct of India's electoral process.
