New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has made available 221 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), comprising roughly 23,000 personnel, to assist the Delhi Police with law-and-order arrangements in the national capital from 8 to 12 October. The deployment comes amid preparations for large-scale protests in Delhi.

According to the details reported by ThePrint, the scale of the deployment is among the largest involving central forces for law-and-order duties in Delhi during recent protest movements. The additional forces are expected to strengthen security arrangements at sensitive locations and areas where large gatherings or demonstrations may take place.

The 221 companies include 111 companies that had previously been made available in connection with protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in July. Another 110 companies were sanctioned on 6 October, significantly increasing the central-force presence being made available to the Delhi Police.

The deployment period has been fixed from 8 October through 12 October, covering the period during which authorities are preparing for potential protests and related law-and-order challenges in the capital.

Forces Being Moved From Several States

A significant aspect of the deployment is the movement of personnel from areas where central forces are already engaged in security and operational duties.

According to the report, companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are being pulled out from the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir. These forces had been retained in the region following the Amarnath Yatra.

Additional personnel are also being moved from West Bengal, where central forces have remained stationed since the previous year's elections. Forces are further being drawn from Chhattisgarh, where CRPF personnel have been specifically deployed for anti-Naxal operations.

The decision to temporarily redeploy these forces highlights the scale of the security requirement being assessed in Delhi. CAPF units are frequently deployed across different parts of the country for election security, counter-insurgency operations, major religious events and maintenance of law and order during periods of heightened tension.

However, moving personnel from operational areas can require careful coordination to ensure that security responsibilities in their existing areas of deployment continue to be adequately managed.

Deployment Linked to Recent Protest Preparations

The latest mobilisation follows the availability of 111 CAPF companies during the CJP protests in July. With another 110 companies sanctioned on 6 October, the total force being made available to Delhi Police for the specified period has reached 221 companies.

The deployment is expected to provide the Delhi Police with additional manpower for crowd management, protection of important installations and maintenance of public order during demonstrations.

The move comes against the backdrop of recent protests in the capital, during which Delhi Police and central security forces have been deployed in substantial numbers. The scale of the current arrangement, however, is notable because of the number of companies being made available over a relatively short period.

CRPF Units From Jammu and Kashmir and Chhattisgarh

The CRPF is one of the country's principal central forces responsible for assisting state and Union Territory administrations in maintaining law and order. Its personnel are also deployed for counter-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations.

The redeployment of companies from Jammu and Kashmir follows their retention in the Jammu region after the Amarnath Yatra. Such forces are typically kept in sensitive areas for security requirements surrounding major pilgrimages and other high-footfall events.

In Chhattisgarh, meanwhile, CRPF personnel have been involved in anti-Naxal operations. The movement of companies from such areas to Delhi indicates that the authorities have assessed the immediate requirement for additional forces in the capital as sufficiently significant to warrant temporary redeployment.

The forces stationed in West Bengal had also remained there following last year's elections, according to the report. Their movement to Delhi adds another component to the central government's effort to augment security manpower in the national capital.

Delhi Police to Receive Additional Support

The Delhi Police remains responsible for maintaining law and order in the national capital, but large-scale demonstrations can require substantial additional manpower. CAPF units can be deployed to support local police in managing crowds and maintaining security during major public gatherings.

The availability of 221 companies will give Delhi Police greater flexibility in positioning personnel according to the requirements of different locations. Security arrangements can include deployment around protest sites, roads, government establishments and other strategically important areas.

The exact locations and operational plans for the deployment have not been detailed in the material provided. Therefore, the deployment should be understood as an augmentation of Delhi's overall law-and-order resources rather than evidence that unrest has already occurred.

Large-Scale Deployment Comes Amid Heightened Security Focus

Delhi has witnessed several major demonstrations in recent years, requiring extensive deployment of police and central forces. The present arrangement is significant because of the number of CAPF companies being made available within a defined five-day period.

The deployment is scheduled to remain in place from 8 to 12 October. During this period, Delhi Police will coordinate with the central forces to manage security requirements and respond to any law-and-order situation arising from protests or large gatherings.

The movement of forces from Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh also reflects the logistical scale involved in assembling such a large contingent. While these personnel are being redeployed, their existing responsibilities in their respective regions will have to be managed through the remaining security arrangements.

For now, the MHA's decision represents a major strengthening of the central security presence available to Delhi Police. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate manpower for maintaining public order during a period when the national capital is preparing for potentially large demonstrations.
