Rahul Gandhi, Opposition Leaders Detained Again During Protest Demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several opposition lawmakers were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday during a fresh protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The detention marked the third time in two days that Gandhi and opposition lawmakers were taken into custody during demonstrations over the revision of voter lists.

The opposition parties have been protesting against the Election Commission’s voter-list revision exercise, alleging that the process has raised serious questions about the neutrality of the poll body. The Election Commission and the Bharatiya Janata Party have denied allegations of wrongdoing.

Opposition Leaders Head Towards Jantar Mantar

Wednesday’s protest followed a lunch meeting organised by the Congress for opposition lawmakers at a restaurant in central Delhi. The meeting was held close to Jantar Mantar, where authorities permit demonstrations.

Gandhi told reporters that opposition lawmakers had decided to proceed towards the designated protest site after being stopped by police during Tuesday’s demonstration. He said the opposition wanted to sit at Jantar Mantar and communicate its position to the country regarding Gyanesh Kumar.

The Congress leader alleged that the controversy involved “vote theft” and demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. His remarks reflected the central argument being raised by opposition parties in their continuing protests against the voter-list revision process.

The opposition has accused the Election Commission of failing to adequately address concerns surrounding changes to electoral rolls. However, the allegations remain disputed, with the poll body and the BJP rejecting accusations of wrongdoing.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Detained

The protesting lawmakers travelled towards Jantar Mantar in a bus while hundreds of Congress workers accompanied them on foot. Posters displayed from the bus carried slogans opposing the alleged manipulation of votes and criticised the Election Commission’s relationship with the ruling BJP.

Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel was reported in the area. Security personnel in riot-control gear were deployed, while police closed the road leading towards Jantar Mantar, forcing the protest bus to take a different route.

Gandhi later stepped out of the bus and joined protesters gathered on the road. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other lawmakers were also seen among the protesters.

Visuals from the protest showed security personnel taking Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into separate vehicles. Several other opposition lawmakers were also detained. Reuters reported that there was no immediate comment from Delhi Police regarding the detentions.

Protest Movement Enters Second Consecutive Day

The latest action came a day after opposition lawmakers staged another demonstration seeking a meeting with Gyanesh Kumar and other Election Commission officials. Police broke up that gathering and briefly detained the protesting lawmakers.

The opposition has continued to organise demonstrations, with Congress and other groups demanding accountability from the Election Commission over the voter-list revision exercise.

The protests intensified after reports of disagreements within the Election Commission concerning the updating of electoral rolls. According to the Reuters report, these reports followed concerns raised after the Indian Express reported disagreements inside the poll panel over changes to voter lists.

Opposition parties have used the issue to question the neutrality and functioning of the Election Commission, while the commission has rejected accusations of wrongdoing.

New Political Challenge for Modi Government

The demonstrations represent another significant political confrontation between the opposition and the Narendra Modi government.

The protests are taking place midway through Modi’s third term and have brought opposition lawmakers together around concerns regarding the electoral process. Congress has been at the forefront of the demonstrations, with Rahul Gandhi repeatedly raising allegations relating to voter-list changes.

During Wednesday’s protest, slogans and posters directly targeted the Election Commission and alleged that the institution was favouring the BJP. The opposition has argued that changes to voter lists could affect the integrity of elections, while the ruling party and the Election Commission have rejected such accusations.

The dispute has therefore developed into a broader political confrontation over the independence and credibility of India’s electoral institutions.

Election Commission and BJP Reject Allegations

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has not commented publicly on the voter-list allegations cited in the Reuters report.

The Election Commission and the BJP have denied accusations of wrongdoing. The Reuters report also notes that the opposition’s demonstrations were prompted by concerns surrounding the revision of electoral rolls, rather than by any established finding of electoral manipulation.

The continuing dispute has placed the Election Commission under heightened political scrutiny as opposition parties seek answers and demand changes in its leadership.

    Protests Continue Amid Political Tensions

The latest detentions came as opposition parties, student groups and youth activists continued demonstrations connected to the voter-list issue. Reuters reported that protests had been taking place almost daily, with demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The demonstrations have also been linked to earlier youth-led political protests that, according to the Reuters report, had contributed to pressure on the Modi government over an examination-paper leak controversy.

For the opposition, the voter-list revision issue has become a major political campaign centred on electoral transparency and the credibility of the Election Commission. For the government and the BJP, the allegations remain unfounded, with both rejecting claims of wrongdoing.

As Rahul Gandhi and other opposition lawmakers were detained for the third time in two days, the confrontation over voter-list revisions showed no immediate signs of easing. The continued protests are likely to keep the Election Commission’s functioning, electoral-roll revisions and allegations of political interference at the centre of India’s political debate.
