Delhi Police Arrest Two Lucknow University Law Students After Disruption Inside Supreme Court

A dramatic incident inside the Supreme Court of India has resulted in the arrest of two law students from Lucknow University after courtroom proceedings were allegedly disrupted by abusive behaviour and disorderly conduct. The incident, which took place during a hearing before a Division Bench of the apex court, has raised serious concerns about maintaining decorum within the country's highest judicial institution.

According to information released by the Delhi Police, the two accused have been identified as Prabal Pratap Singh (24), a third-year law student, and Chander Bhan (23), a second-year law student at Lucknow University. Police stated that both individuals were taken into custody in connection with the events that unfolded during a Supreme Court hearing on 10 July 2026.

The case was registered at Tilak Marg Police Station following a complaint lodged by the Supreme Court's security personnel. Authorities have alleged that the accused disrupted court proceedings, obstructed security officials in the discharge of their duties, and engaged in behaviour considered inappropriate inside the courtroom.

What Happened Inside the Supreme Court?

The incident occurred during a hearing before a Bench comprising Justice K.V. Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe. One of the accused, Prabal Pratap Singh, was appearing as a petitioner-in-person, meaning he was representing himself without legal counsel.

Court proceedings reportedly took an unexpected turn when, instead of presenting legal arguments, Singh addressed the Bench in an unusual and confrontational manner. According to reports, he demanded that the judges direct the registration of an FIR against an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Lucknow.

His remarks reportedly surprised the Bench, which questioned the manner in which he was addressing the court. Shortly thereafter, the situation escalated when Singh allegedly threw documents inside the courtroom and used abusive language, bringing the proceedings to a temporary halt.

Security personnel intervened immediately to restore order. Officials alleged that while being escorted out of the courtroom, the accused continued using offensive language and resisted the actions of security staff.

Delhi Police Register Criminal Case

Following the incident, Delhi Police initiated legal proceedings based on a complaint submitted by the Supreme Court's security officials. Investigators stated that the accused have been booked under relevant provisions related to obstruction of public servants, disturbing court proceedings and other applicable offences under Indian law.

Police also confirmed that several pamphlets allegedly containing objectionable language were recovered during the investigation. These documents are reportedly being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Authorities presented both accused before a Delhi court, which granted two days of police custody to facilitate further investigation.

Medical Examination Conducted

As part of the investigation, both accused reportedly underwent medical examination at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in Delhi.

However, while the judicial proceedings concluded without granting relief to the petitioner, the separate law enforcement process was initiated based on the complaint submitted by the court's security staff regarding the alleged misconduct.
