A dramatic incident inside the Supreme Court of India has taken a legal turn after Delhi Police arrested two law students from Lucknow University in connection with a courtroom disturbance that took place during a hearing on July 10. The incident, which unfolded in open court before a Bench of Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe, has raised fresh concerns about courtroom discipline, the security of judicial institutions, and the conduct expected from litigants appearing before the country's highest court.

According to Delhi Police, the two accused have been identified as 24-year-old Prabal Pratap Singh and 23-year-old Chander Bhan, both students of the Faculty of Law at Lucknow University. Officials stated that a criminal case was registered at Tilak Marg Police Station following a complaint submitted by the Supreme Court's security personnel regarding the disruption that occurred during judicial proceedings.

Investigators alleged that Prabal Pratap Singh, who appeared before the Supreme Court as a petitioner-in-person, created chaos inside the courtroom by using abusive language, throwing case papers, and refusing to follow courtroom protocol. Authorities further claimed that the disturbance interrupted official court proceedings and compelled security personnel to intervene.

Police officials said the investigation was initiated immediately after the complaint from the Supreme Court's security staff. During the course of the inquiry, both accused were taken into custody. Reports indicate that they underwent medical examinations at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in Delhi, where doctors reportedly declared them mentally fit.

Investigators also claimed to have recovered pamphlets allegedly containing objectionable language from the possession of the accused. These materials are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation. A Delhi court has reportedly granted Delhi Police two days of custodial remand to question the accused further and collect additional evidence related to the case.

The courtroom disturbance occurred while the Supreme Court was hearing a petition challenging an April 2026 judgment delivered by the Allahabad High Court. Instead of presenting legal arguments in support of his plea, the petitioner allegedly addressed the Bench in an unusual and confrontational manner.

As per accounts presented before the court, the petitioner reportedly demanded that the judges direct the registration of an FIR against a police official from Lucknow. The Bench questioned the unusual manner in which the request was made, after which the exchange escalated.

Moments later, the courtroom atmosphere reportedly turned tense when the petitioner allegedly threw documents into the air and began using abusive language during the hearing. Security officials present inside the courtroom immediately intervened and escorted him outside. Reports also suggest that while being removed from the courtroom, he continued to make objectionable remarks directed at senior members of the judiciary.

Despite the disruption, the Supreme Court proceeded to examine the legal merits of the petition before it. The Bench ultimately found no grounds to interfere with the judgment of the Allahabad High Court and dismissed the plea.

Interestingly, in its judicial order passed on July 10, the Supreme Court observed that it did not intend to initiate direct judicial action against the petitioner over his conduct inside the courtroom. However, the alleged incident subsequently became the subject of a separate police investigation based on the complaint filed by court security personnel.

Legal experts note that while courts possess powers to initiate contempt proceedings for acts that obstruct the administration of justice, law enforcement agencies may independently investigate alleged criminal offences if complaints are filed regarding disruption of official duties, obstruction of public servants, or other offences under applicable laws.

The incident has generated significant discussion within legal circles, particularly because the accused is himself a law student. Members of the legal fraternity have stressed that aspiring lawyers are expected to uphold the dignity of judicial institutions and respect courtroom procedures regardless of the nature of their grievances.

Courtroom decorum remains one of the foundational principles of India's justice delivery system. Every litigant, advocate, or individual appearing before a constitutional court is expected to conduct themselves respectfully and present arguments through established legal procedures. Any behaviour that disrupts proceedings can not only delay the administration of justice but may also affect the functioning of courts and inconvenience other litigants awaiting hearings.

The arrest has also renewed debate about security arrangements inside courts. While Supreme Court security personnel responded promptly to the disturbance, legal observers believe that such incidents underline the need for continued vigilance to ensure the safety of judges, court staff, lawyers, and litigants.

Officials have clarified that the investigation is continuing and additional evidence, including CCTV footage, witness statements, and recovered materials, is being examined. Police are expected to question the accused further during the remand period to determine whether any additional offences are made out under law.

Meanwhile, Lucknow University has not officially announced any disciplinary action regarding the students at the time of writing. It remains to be seen whether the institution will initiate an internal inquiry based on the outcome of the criminal investigation.

The matter is now before the investigating authorities, and further legal proceedings are expected in accordance with the findings of the police investigation. As the case progresses, the courts will determine the legal responsibility of the accused based on the evidence presented before them.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the dignity and sanctity of judicial institutions. While every citizen has the constitutional right to seek justice and challenge decisions through legal remedies, the judicial process depends on mutual respect, adherence to courtroom procedures, and the rule of law. Authorities have reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing, and the accused will continue to be dealt with in accordance with due legal process until the matter reaches its judicial conclusion.
