Dropped From T20 World Cup Squad, Shubman Gill Looks to Domestic Cricket for Comeback

India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill has suffered an unusual setback after being excluded from India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The 25-year-old, regarded as one of the pillars of Indian cricket’s future, was also left out of the T20I series against New Zealand, following a prolonged dip in form in the shortest format.

Gill has managed only 291 runs in 15 T20I innings over the past four months, failing to score a single half-century. This downturn prompted selectors to overlook him despite his strong standing in ODIs and Tests and his recent backing by the BCCI as a potential all-format leader.

The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy now offers Gill a crucial opportunity to make a statement. Named in Punjab’s squad for the List A tournament beginning December 24, Gill will be eager to remind selectors of his white-ball pedigree. Punjab teammates Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, both part of India’s limited-overs setup, have also been included in the squad.

However, Gill’s availability in the latter stages of the tournament remains uncertain. India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against New Zealand from January 11, followed by a five-match T20I series starting January 21. The Vijay Hazare Trophy league stage concludes on January 8, just days before the first ODI.
