IndiGo Flight Disruptions Trigger Luggage Chaos at Delhi Airport

Massive piles of unclaimed luggage were seen at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as IndiGo continued to struggle with operational disruptions. Viral visuals from Terminal 1 showed hundreds of suitcases lined up, with passengers reporting delays of more than 24 hours in receiving their bags.

According to reports, IndiGo’s baggage-handling systems have been overwhelmed after widespread flight cancellations over the past few days. Ground staff continue to sort and deliver luggage as complaints rise across the country.

A senior IndiGo official said the airline is conducting a “root cause analysis” of the disruptions and aims to stabilise operations by December 10. The airline stated that it has sufficient pilots and denied shortages, though issues linked to new flight duty norms have been cited as key factors behind the cancellations.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in an internal message that the airline’s On Time Performance is expected to reach 75%, with nearly 1,650 flights operating today. Passenger refunds amounting to ₹610 crore have been processed so far, while 3,000 pieces of stranded baggage have already been delivered.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation said domestic air travel is stabilising rapidly, with all other airlines functioning normally. IndiGo’s operations have risen from 706 flights on December 5 to over 1,560 on December 6, and further improvements are expected.
