Air India Mumbai-Bound Boeing 777 Returns to Delhi After Right Engine Problem

A Mumbai-bound Air India Boeing 777 aircraft was forced to return to Delhi on Monday morning after a technical issue was detected in its right engine, according to official sources.

The aircraft, operating flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai, was carrying about 335 passengers and crew. It remained in the air for nearly an hour before the pilots decided to turn back and make an emergency landing at the national capital.

Air India said the decision to return was taken shortly after take-off in line with standard operating procedures after the crew noticed a technical issue. The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers and crew disembarked without any injury. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the unexpected situation.

Sources in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the aircraft made an air turn-back after the flight crew observed low engine oil pressure in the right-hand engine during flap retraction after take-off. The engine oil pressure reportedly dropped to zero, following which inspections were initiated.

According to the DGCA source, a review of the aircraft’s previous maintenance records did not show any abnormal oil consumption. The aircraft is currently undergoing detailed technical checks.

Air India stated that alternative arrangements were made to transport passengers to Mumbai while the aircraft undergoes the required inspections.

Flight tracking data indicated that the Boeing 777-300ER took off from Delhi at around 6:30 a.m. and remained airborne for approximately one hour before returning.

The incident occurred on December 22, 2025, and investigations into the technical issue are ongoing.
