Delhi High Court Orders Removal of Obscene AI Content Using R Madhavan’s Name

The Delhi High Court on Monday stepped in to protect actor R Madhavan’s personality rights, directing websites and online platforms to remove obscene and misleading content that uses his name, images, or likeness without permission.

The court restrained any individual or digital platform from commercially exploiting Madhavan’s identity, including through AI-generated or deepfake content, without his consent. The move comes amid rising concerns over the misuse of celebrity images online.

Madhavan approached the court after discovering multiple objectionable videos and fake promotional material circulating on social media and other websites. His legal team told the court that some content falsely placed the actor in fabricated scenarios, while others promoted fake movie trailers, including misleading clips claiming upcoming releases of Shaitaan 2 and Kesari 3.

Senior Advocate Swathi Sukumar, appearing for the actor, said Madhavan had first requested social media platforms to remove the content, but several posts continued to remain online, prompting legal action. The court questioned platforms on why some content was taken down while similar material was allowed to remain accessible.

While the court ordered immediate removal of obscene material and restricted further misuse of the actor’s identity, it said broader legal questions around AI-generated content would be examined in detail. The judge noted that certain content could be made “invisible” for now and scheduled the matter for further hearing in May 2026.

The High Court also heard similar petitions filed by actors Jr NTR and Pawan Kalyan, indicating that detailed interim orders would be passed in those cases as well.

R Madhavan has had a successful year at the box office, featuring in several films including Dhurandhar, which emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, earning over ₹850 crore worldwide.
