Delhi Businessman Dies After Late-Night Assault in Connaught Place; Delivery Agents Among Accused

A 36-year-old businessman from East Delhi has died after sustaining critical head injuries in a late-night assault in Connaught Place earlier this month, raising fresh concerns about public safety in one of the capital’s busiest commercial and nightlife zones.

The incident occurred on the night of January 2 near the Rajiv Chowk Metro station, a central and heavily frequented area of Delhi. The victim, identified as Shivam Gupta, had gone to the area to attend a social gathering with a friend. What began as a brief verbal disagreement reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving him severely injured and unconscious on the road.

    Altercation Turns Violent

According to police officials familiar with the investigation, the altercation began when Shivam Gupta approached a group of delivery workers and asked for drinking water. An argument followed, which soon turned physical. Investigators allege that around three individuals were involved in the assault.

During the incident, the attackers allegedly struck the victim repeatedly, including blows to the head. Police sources say helmets were used during the assault, resulting in serious cranial injuries. After the attack, Shivam was left lying on the road, bleeding and unresponsive.

    Police Alerted in Early Hours

At around 1:30 am on January 3, the police received a PCR call reporting an unconscious man lying on the road. A police team reached the spot and rushed the injured man to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctors who examined him found multiple severe head injuries along with a haematoma, indicating internal bleeding in the brain. Due to his critical condition, Shivam was not in a position to give a statement to the police at that time.

Family Learns of Incident Hours Later

Meanwhile, Shivam’s family grew anxious when he did not return home and could not be contacted despite repeated phone calls. Several hours later, they were informed by the police that he had been admitted to hospital following a serious assault.

On January 4, he was referred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for advanced treatment. He underwent surgery the following day, and doctors advised the family that the next 36 to 72 hours would be crucial. While there were brief indications of improvement in his condition, his health later deteriorated.

After battling his injuries for over two weeks, Shivam Gupta succumbed on January 19.

    Investigation and Arrests

Following the incident, Delhi Police conducted a detailed examination of the crime scene and collected bloodstained evidence from the area. CCTV footage from nearby locations was reviewed to identify those involved and reconstruct the sequence of events.

An initial case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police officials indicated that additional charges could be added as the investigation progresses, particularly after the victim’s death.

So far, two suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in the assault. Police are also examining the background of the accused and their movements on the night of the incident.

    Family Seeks Justice

The victim’s family has alleged that Shivam was attacked with helmets, describing the assault as brutal and unprovoked. They have demanded strict action against those responsible.

“Our son did not deserve this. He lost his life after being attacked in a public place. We want justice and strong punishment for those involved so that no other family has to suffer like this,” a family member said.

    Safety Concerns in Central Delhi

The incident has once again brought attention to security conditions in Connaught Place, particularly during late-night hours. Despite being a high-profile commercial and tourist hub with a significant police presence, cases of late-night violence have continued to be reported from the area.

Residents, traders, and civil society groups have repeatedly called for stronger policing, improved lighting, and more effective monitoring in central Delhi after midnight. The case has also sparked discussions around the conduct, training, and accountability of gig economy workers operating in public spaces late at night.

Police officials have stated that patrols and surveillance measures are being reviewed, and that action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

As the probe continues, the case has left behind a grieving family and renewed questions about how safe Delhi’s most prominent public spaces truly are after dark.
