Dwarka SUV Crash: Father of Minor Driver Apologises as Investigation Deepens

Days after a fatal road accident in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka claimed the life of a 23-year-old motorcyclist, the father of the minor accused of driving the SUV involved in the crash has issued a public apology, describing the incident as a grave mistake that has left two families shattered. The case has intensified national debate around juvenile driving, parental responsibility, and enforcement of traffic laws in urban India.

The accident, which occurred in early February near a prominent educational institute in Dwarka’s Sector 11, resulted in the instantaneous death of Sahil Dhaneshra, a young professional who was returning from work on his motorcycle. According to investigators, a Scorpio SUV being driven at high speed rammed into the motorcycle, throwing the victim onto the road and causing catastrophic injuries.

Medical findings later confirmed that Sahil suffered a fractured skull, multiple broken ribs, and severe trauma to his limbs due to the force of the collision. He was declared dead at the spot.

    Minor Driver Detained, Father Booked

Police officials confirmed that the vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old boy, who was detained at the scene. Initial questioning revealed that the minor had attempted to misrepresent his age, a detail that further complicated the investigation. The vehicle involved was later identified as belonging to the family’s commercial transport business.

The case is being investigated by the Delhi Police, which has registered multiple charges related to rash driving, negligence leading to death, and endangering human life. Investigators also invoked provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act that hold guardians or vehicle owners accountable when a minor commits a traffic offence.

A senior police officer stated that responsibility in such cases does not end with the driver alone. “When a minor is behind the wheel, accountability extends to those who enabled access to the vehicle,” the officer said.

    Father’s Apology and Statement

After being questioned by the police, the accused’s father addressed the media and expressed remorse, stating that he was not in the city at the time of the incident and was unaware that his son had taken the vehicle. He said the news of the crash was conveyed to him by his wife.

“This is my son’s mistake, and I deeply regret what has happened. I can only imagine the pain the victim’s family is going through,” he said, adding that his family is equally traumatised by the tragedy.

He clarified that the SUV is part of his commercial transport operations and that previous traffic challans against the vehicle were related to drivers employed in the business. He also denied knowledge of any video recording or social media activity linked to the incident, stating that the focus should remain on accountability and justice rather than speculation.

The father further assured full cooperation with law enforcement authorities and said all documents sought by the police had been provided.

Legal Proceedings and Juvenile Justice Process

Following his detention, the minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which ordered his placement in an observation home. He was later granted interim bail to appear for his Class 10 board examinations, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions on social media and among the public.

Legal experts note that while juvenile law prioritises reform over punishment, recent incidents have renewed calls for stricter scrutiny in cases involving fatal consequences. The accused’s father has also been booked under specific provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, reinforcing the principle of parental liability.

Police officials confirmed that the chargesheet will include sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India’s updated criminal law framework, replacing the earlier Indian Penal Code.

    The Victim’s Family Speaks

Sahil Dhaneshra’s mother, speaking through tears, described her son as hardworking and ambitious. She said he was just minutes away from his workplace when the crash occurred and alleged that help arrived too late.

“My son was lying on the road for several minutes. He should never have been hit by a vehicle driven by a child,” she said, demanding strict action against those responsible.

Sahil was working part-time at an insurance firm and had plans to travel abroad later this year for higher studies. Friends and colleagues described him as disciplined, focused, and hopeful about the future—dreams that were abruptly cut short.

What Happened on the Day of the Crash

According to the police reconstruction of events, the SUV first struck Sahil’s Yamaha R15 motorcycle before crashing into a parked car, injuring a cab driver seated inside. The sequence of collisions highlighted the speed and loss of control involved in the incident.

Authorities stated that the minor was apprehended immediately, preventing any attempt to flee. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being analysed to establish the exact speed and movement of the vehicle prior to the crash.

    Broader Questions on Road Safety

The Dwarka crash has reignited concerns over minors driving high-powered vehicles in metropolitan cities, often with the tacit approval or negligence of adults. Road safety activists argue that enforcement gaps, coupled with social tolerance, have made underage driving a recurring threat.

Experts stress that beyond legal action, sustained awareness and parental accountability are critical to preventing such tragedies. “Every fatal crash involving a minor reflects a systemic failure—not just of law enforcement, but of social responsibility,” said a Delhi-based road safety campaigner.

    Investigation Continues

Police officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that forensic reports, vehicle records, and witness statements are being compiled. Authorities have assured the victim’s family that the case will be pursued with seriousness and transparency.

As the legal process unfolds, the Dwarka SUV crash stands as a grim reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the irreversible cost of a single moment of negligence.

For now, two families remain bound by grief—one mourning a life lost, the other grappling with guilt and accountability—while the justice system works to determine responsibility under the law.
