Patna: At least six people died and several others were injured after a stampede-like incident at the Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district of Bihar on Monday. Police officials said the incident may have been triggered after an electricity pole reportedly fell near a gathering of devotees, causing panic among the crowd.

Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials have cautioned that the precise cause has not yet been established and that different factors are being examined as part of the preliminary inquiry.

The incident occurred as a large number of devotees had gathered at the temple during the ongoing Hindu holy month. According to officials, the sudden fall of an electricity pole may have caused alarm among those present, leading to a rush and a situation resembling a stampede.

    Electricity Pole Fall Suspected

Senior police officer Shivam Kumar said authorities were examining reports that an electricity pole had fallen at the location and that some people may have suffered electric shocks.

He said the incident subsequently developed into a stampede-like situation as people reacted to the sudden emergency. However, officials stressed that the exact sequence of events would only become clear after a detailed verification.

The authorities are therefore examining the circumstances at the temple, including what caused the pole to fall, whether anyone came into contact with electrical equipment and how the crowd responded following the incident.

The investigation is expected to establish whether the deaths were directly linked to electrocution, injuries sustained during the rush, or a combination of factors.

    Six People Reportedly Killed

At least six people have died in the incident, while at least five others were reported injured. The injured were taken to hospitals for medical treatment.

Television footage from the area showed relatives and members of the public gathering outside hospitals as rescue teams transported injured people on stretchers.

The incident caused distress among devotees and their families, with emergency personnel working to move those affected from the temple premises to medical facilities.

Authorities are expected to provide further information about the identities of those who died and the condition of those receiving treatment as the verification process continues.

    Investigation Underway

Officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine exactly what happened at the temple.

The initial account indicates that the falling electricity pole may have caused panic among worshippers. However, authorities have not yet formally concluded that this was the sole cause of the incident.

Investigators are expected to examine the electrical infrastructure at the site, the movement of the crowd, emergency response arrangements and the sequence of events immediately before and after the incident.

Such investigations are important in determining whether the incident resulted from an unexpected accident, inadequate crowd-management arrangements, electrical infrastructure problems or multiple factors occurring simultaneously.

Officials have urged caution against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed.

    Crowd Safety at Religious Gatherings

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges associated with managing large gatherings at religious sites.

Religious festivals and holy occasions frequently attract large numbers of devotees. When thousands of people gather in a confined area, even a sudden and unexpected event can lead to panic and rapid movement within the crowd.

In such circumstances, effective crowd-management systems, clearly marked exit routes, emergency medical facilities and functioning electrical infrastructure are important components of public safety.

The Bihar incident is likely to prompt renewed questions about safety arrangements at the temple, particularly concerning electrical installations and the management of large numbers of visitors.

Bihar Has Witnessed Other Crowd Incidents

India has experienced several major crowd-related accidents over the years, particularly at large religious gatherings. Such incidents have repeatedly raised concerns about crowd density, movement control, emergency preparedness and coordination between authorities.

One of the major recent examples was the crowd accident during the Maha Kumbh festival in Uttar Pradesh in January 2025, where dozens of people died after a crowd surge.

Large religious gatherings present unique safety challenges because people may arrive in significant numbers within a short period, creating pressure on entry and exit points. Sudden incidents such as structural failures, electrical problems, rumours or medical emergencies can quickly cause panic.

Authorities therefore generally focus on preventing overcrowding and ensuring that emergency services can reach affected areas quickly.

    Families Await Further Information

As rescue and medical operations continued, relatives gathered at hospitals to seek information about their family members.

For the families of those who died, the incident has resulted in a tragic loss during what was supposed to be a religious gathering. Those injured are being treated at medical facilities, while officials continue to assess the overall situation.

Further details about the victims, the number of injured people and the exact circumstances of the incident are expected to emerge as authorities complete their verification.

Authorities Yet to Establish Exact Cause

Although the initial police account points towards a possible electricity pole fall followed by a stampede-like situation, authorities have not yet confirmed the complete chain of events.

Officials have indicated that the precise reason can only be established after examining all available information.

The investigation will therefore be crucial in determining what caused the incident and whether any safety shortcomings contributed to the deaths and injuries.

For now, the priority remains providing medical assistance to the injured, supporting affected families and establishing the facts surrounding the tragedy.

The incident at Ashok Dham temple has once again underscored the importance of robust safety and crowd-management measures at major religious gatherings, particularly when large numbers of devotees assemble in a limited area.
