25 Dead in Massive Fire at Goa Nightclub; Fireworks Suspected as Cause

A devastating fire at the Birch nightclub in Goa has killed 25 people, including tourists and staff, according to local officials. The incident took place late Saturday at the popular venue located near a major beach. Authorities initially suspected a kitchen gas cylinder blast, but Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant later confirmed that indoor fireworks are now believed to have triggered the blaze.

The nightclub was crowded with visitors who had gathered for a performance by a Bollywood DJ. Police said four members of a family from Delhi were among the victims, while the remaining 21 were staff members. Four people, including the club’s manager, have been arrested, and an arrest warrant has been issued for the owner.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the fire spread rapidly. Many reported hearing screams before noticing the flames. Firefighters struggled to access the main structure due to a narrow crossing over a small lake, despite the venue having a wide entrance. Burned furniture and debris were seen scattered across the charred interior.

Chief Minister Sawant confirmed that three victims died due to burns, while most others succumbed to suffocation. Six injured people are receiving treatment in hospital and are in stable condition. Most of the workers who died were from Indian states such as Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka, along with one worker from Nepal.

Emergency teams continued to search the wreckage on Sunday as the state government launched an official inquiry. A detailed report is expected within a week. Sawant stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found negligent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy “deeply saddening” in a social media post. The incident has renewed concerns over safety standards at entertainment venues in India, which has seen several major fire accidents in recent years.
