AIADMK Unveils Fresh Electoral Assurances Ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly election approaching, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Wednesday announced a new set of welfare-oriented electoral assurances, expanding its list of poll promises as part of its campaign strategy for the 2026 polls scheduled in April–May.

AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami made the announcements after chairing a meeting of district secretaries at the party headquarters in Chennai. With the latest additions, the party’s total number of election promises has now reached ten.

Free Cooking Gas Cylinders, Pension Hike Announced

Among the key assurances, the AIADMK promised to provide three free cooking gas cylinders every year to ration cardholders who draw rice through the public distribution system. The party also committed to increasing the monthly old-age pension from the current ₹1,200 to ₹2,000, a move aimed at senior citizens who form a significant section of the electorate.

Another major announcement was the waiver of education loans taken from banks, which the party said would offer relief to young borrowers and families burdened by repayment obligations.

    Compensation Linked to Jallikattu Events

Addressing issues related to traditional sports, Mr. Palaniswami announced that the family of any person who dies while participating in jallikattu would be provided financial assistance of ₹10 lakh. In cases of injury during the event, compensation of ₹2 lakh would be given.

In addition, the AIADMK pledged a subsidy of ₹5 lakh for organising jallikattu at government-approved venues. The party also said it would restore the manual registration system for the sport, replacing the existing online registration process, which has faced criticism from some organisers and participants.

Support for Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities

As part of its social welfare focus, the party announced interest-free loans for women self-help groups belonging to religious minority communities. It also promised to waive loans taken by persons with disabilities from cooperative societies, citing the need for targeted financial support to vulnerable groups.

The announcements were positioned as part of the party’s broader effort to address livelihood concerns, cultural issues, and welfare needs across different sections of society.

Sharp Criticism of the Ruling DMK

During the interaction with the media, Mr. Palaniswami launched a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), alleging that the present government had failed to deliver effective governance. He claimed that there was little for the State to take pride in under the current administration and alleged a deterioration in law and order.

Referring to incidents of crime, he contended that violence against women had become frequent, asserting that such incidents were being reported almost daily. The remarks were part of a broader critique aimed at highlighting what the AIADMK describes as governance failures under the DMK regime.

    Remarks on Political Rivals

Responding to indirect comments made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay, Mr. Palaniswami said the actor appeared disconnected from ground realities in the State. He suggested that Vijay first address the media directly before making broad political observations, adding a touch of sarcasm to his response.

The exchange reflects the increasingly competitive political environment in Tamil Nadu, where established parties and new entrants are sharpening their messaging ahead of the elections.

    Election Context

Tamil Nadu is expected to go to the polls in April or May 2026, with welfare promises and governance records likely to play a central role in voter decision-making. Political observers note that parties across the spectrum are focusing heavily on economic relief measures, social security, and cultural issues as part of their outreach.

The AIADMK’s latest announcements signal an attempt to consolidate support among low-income households, senior citizens, youth, and rural communities, while also reaffirming its stance on traditional practices such as jallikattu.

As campaigning intensifies in the coming weeks, more such policy pledges are expected from major political players, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest in the State
