CJI Declines Tamil Nadu’s Request for Urgent Listing in Thiruparankundram Hill Case

The Supreme Court on Friday declined an oral request by the Tamil Nadu government seeking urgent listing of its petition challenging a Madras High Court order on lamp-lighting at the Thiruparankundram hills. When the matter was mentioned, the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, refused to entertain the request, reminding counsel that oral listings are no longer allowed except in cases of extreme urgency under the Court’s recent circular.

During the brief hearing, another counsel opposed the State’s request, alleging that the government was attempting to show the High Court that it had approached the Supreme Court. The State’s counsel clarified that he was only seeking a listing, but the CJI responded, “No mentioning, thank you.”

The Tamil Nadu authorities have moved the Supreme Court against the High Court’s order permitting devotees of the Arulmighu Subramaniya Swamy Temple to light lamps at the Deepathoon stone pillar atop the Thiruparankundram hills, close to a dargah. The petition challenges the dismissal of the State’s appeal in contempt proceedings related to earlier directions ensuring security for the ritual.

Following the High Court’s order, local reports indicate that officials did not allow lamp-lighting on Thursday, and several individuals attempting to reach the hill were taken into custody. The petition has been filed by the Madurai District Collector and the Commissioner of Police, who are facing contempt proceedings before the single bench.
