Deep Depression Near Chennai Brings Continuous Rain; Schools, Colleges Shut in Four Districts

A deep depression lying close to the Chennai coast brought widespread and continuous rainfall across the city and neighbouring districts on Monday, prompting authorities to announce a holiday for educational institutions in four districts.

Officials in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday as several areas reported steady rain from Sunday night.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, the system—originally Cyclone Ditwah before weakening—moved slowly northwards over the southwest Bay of Bengal. As of 11:30 a.m., it was positioned about 50 km east-southeast of Chennai, and roughly 140 km from Puducherry and 160 km from Cuddalore.

The RMC warned of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Chennai and Tiruvallur throughout Monday, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Ranipet, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts. Light to moderate showers are expected across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday.

The system is forecast to move parallel to the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts and may weaken further into a depression by Monday night.

Over the 24-hour period ending Monday morning, Mahabalipuram recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm, while many areas in Chennai and parts of Cuddalore and Chengalpattu received between 3 and 4 cm.

While major waterlogging was not reported, the Greater Chennai Corporation said minor stagnation in pockets of Manali, Tondiarpet and Adyar was being cleared with pumps.

Commuters, particularly students and parents, faced inconvenience in reaching schools earlier in the day before the holiday announcement.
