Delhi Gets Slight Relief as Cold Wave Weakens, Minimum Temperature Rises to 4.3°C

After enduring several days of intense winter chill, residents of the national capital experienced a slight respite on Friday as Delhi’s minimum temperature rose to 4.3 degrees Celsius. The improvement came after a five-day spell of severe cold conditions that pushed temperatures to near-freezing levels across the city.

According to weather officials, while the rise in temperature has brought marginal relief, conditions in Delhi remain colder than usual for this time of year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the minimum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung observatory was still 3.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.

    Temperature Across Key Areas

Different parts of the capital recorded similar trends. Palam registered a minimum temperature of 4.7 degrees Celsius, which was 2.8 degrees below normal, while Lodhi Road also logged a minimum of 4.7 degrees Celsius, about 1.3 degrees below average.

The Ridge area recorded a comparatively higher minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, though this too remained significantly below normal levels. Ayanagar reported a minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius. Overall, meteorological data indicates that while the extreme cold has eased slightly, winter conditions continue to dominate the region.

The IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius for the day, which could provide some daytime comfort. However, mornings and nights are expected to remain cold, with chilly winds adding to the discomfort.

    Recent Record-Low Temperatures

The past week witnessed some of the coldest January mornings in recent years. On Thursday, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest January reading since 2023. A day earlier, Palam saw the mercury drop to 2.3 degrees Celsius, the coldest January temperature there since 2010.

These readings highlight the intensity of the cold wave that swept through Delhi and surrounding regions, affecting daily life and straining infrastructure not typically designed for harsh winter conditions.

Air Quality Remains a Major Concern

Despite the slight moderation in temperature, air pollution continues to pose a serious challenge for the capital. Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) on Friday stood at 348, placing it firmly in the “very poor” category.

Out of the city’s monitoring stations, 33 reported air quality levels in the “very poor” range, four were classified as “poor,” and one station recorded “severe” air quality. The Pusa area reported the worst conditions, with an AQI reading of 403.

Experts explain that during winter, lower temperatures and calm wind conditions trap pollutants close to the ground. This leads to reduced visibility and deteriorating air quality, increasing the risk of respiratory discomfort, particularly for children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing health issues.

    Impact on Daily Life

The cold weather, combined with poor air quality, has significantly affected daily routines in the capital. Early mornings have been marked by dense fog and low visibility, while residents have been seen stepping out wrapped in heavy woolens, scarves, and caps.

In several areas, people have resorted to using portable heaters and lighting small fires in open spaces to keep warm. Commuters and cyclists on major roads have been observed shielding their faces from the cold winds as they navigate through foggy conditions.

Transport services have also faced disruptions in recent days due to reduced visibility, though conditions showed some improvement as the cold wave began to subside.

    What Lies Ahead

Meteorologists suggest that the intensity of the cold wave is likely to weaken further in the coming days. Gradual improvement in night temperatures is expected, though cold conditions may persist during early morning and late evening hours.

However, experts caution that meaningful improvement in air quality will depend on changes in wind patterns and atmospheric conditions. Until then, pollution levels may remain a concern despite slight fluctuations in temperature.

Authorities continue to advise residents to take necessary precautions, including limiting outdoor activities during early mornings and late evenings, staying warm, and following health advisories related to cold weather and air quality.

As winter progresses, Delhi remains caught between easing temperatures and persistent environmental challenges, with residents hoping for clearer skies and more stable weather conditions in the days ahead.
