India Counters Pakistan’s Narrative on Operation Sindoor at United Nations

India has strongly contested Pakistan’s statements on Operation Sindoor during deliberations at the United Nations Security Council, asserting that Islamabad presented a selective and misleading account of events. Addressing the Council during an open debate on international rule of law and multilateral cooperation, India said attempts to reshape facts through diplomatic platforms cannot override documented realities or established international positions.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that Pakistan’s remarks reflected a narrow and self-serving interpretation of developments linked to Operation Sindoor, which took place in May last year. He reiterated that India’s actions followed a serious incident in April 2025 in which civilians lost their lives, an event that had drawn global concern and condemnation.

According to the Indian envoy, the Security Council itself had called for accountability for those responsible for planning, financing, and enabling the attack. India maintained that its response was in line with those calls and focused on preventing further harm to civilians. The actions, he said, were limited, responsible, and aimed at addressing specific security threats rather than escalating tensions.

    India Rejects Claims of Escalation

India also challenged Pakistan’s portrayal of the aftermath of the operation. The representative noted that until early May, official statements from across the border included warnings of further action against India. However, he said that direct military-level communication on May 10 led to a request for cessation of hostilities, underscoring India’s assertion that it did not seek prolonged confrontation.

Responding to claims of success made by Pakistan, India stated that publicly available material, including imagery and independent assessments, indicated the impact of the operation on certain facilities. The envoy stressed that such information was accessible in the public domain and contradicted narratives being promoted at international forums.

India cautioned that selective storytelling at the United Nations risks undermining the credibility of multilateral institutions, especially when facts are readily verifiable. The representative urged members to rely on evidence and established records rather than rhetorical positioning.

Firm Stand Against Normalisation of Violence

A central theme of India’s intervention was its opposition to any attempt to normalise violence in the region. The Indian envoy objected to references suggesting that such acts should be viewed as a “new normal,” stating that harm to civilians and destabilising activities can never be treated as routine or acceptable.

He emphasised that the Security Council should remain alert to narratives that seek to downplay the seriousness of such actions or dilute responsibility. According to India, allowing such framing risks weakening global commitments to peace, accountability, and the rule of law.

India further stated that continued tolerance of these approaches would undermine collective efforts to ensure stability in South Asia and beyond. The envoy reiterated that multilateral forums should not be used to legitimise actions that threaten civilian safety or regional security.

    Reaffirmation on Jammu and Kashmir

During the address, India once again clarified its position on Jammu and Kashmir. The representative stated that the Union Territory has always been and will remain an integral part of India. He added that external parties have no standing to comment on matters that fall entirely within India’s internal constitutional framework.

India highlighted that governance and administrative decisions in Jammu and Kashmir are guided by domestic law and democratic processes, with a focus on development, security, and the welfare of local residents. The envoy said that raising the issue in international forums does not alter its legal or constitutional status.

    Indus Waters Treaty Explained

India also addressed questions surrounding its decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. The envoy recalled that the agreement was signed over six decades ago in a spirit of cooperation, even amid challenging circumstances.

He stated that over the years, repeated strains on bilateral relations and ongoing security concerns had eroded the trust required for such arrangements to function effectively. According to India, the decision to suspend the treaty was not taken lightly but reflected accumulated concerns over adherence to its underlying principles.

The representative said the future of the treaty would depend on credible improvements in the broader environment, particularly with regard to cross-border stability and cooperation.

Call for Adherence to Rule of Law

In concluding remarks, India urged Pakistan to reflect on commitments to democratic norms and the rule of law. The envoy stressed that lasting peace requires accountability, institutional integrity, and respect for international obligations.

India reiterated that it remains committed to safeguarding its citizens while engaging constructively within the United Nations system. The statement underlined New Delhi’s position that responsible dialogue, grounded in facts and international law, is essential for strengthening multilateralism and ensuring regional stability.

The exchange at the Security Council highlighted the continued diplomatic tensions between the two neighbours, even as India emphasised that multilateral platforms must prioritise accuracy, accountability, and the protection of civilians over competing narratives.
