India–US Trade Deal Reflects ‘Sustained Patience’, PM Modi Tells NDA Leaders in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the recently announced India–United States trade agreement as the outcome of “sustained patience and consistent effort” while addressing leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) during a Parliamentary Party meeting in the capital. The prime minister underlined that steady diplomacy and a long-term approach to negotiations had delivered tangible economic results for the country.

The meeting was held at the Parliament Annexe amid an ongoing Budget Session, a day after the United States formally announced a reduction in tariffs on Indian exports. According to public statements from both sides, Washington will lower its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, and is also expected to withdraw an additional punitive duty that had significantly raised the overall tariff burden on Indian products.

Emphasis on Patience in Trade Negotiations

Addressing NDA Members of Parliament, Prime Minister Modi reportedly noted that the government had faced criticism in the past over its handling of tariff-related issues, but chose not to react hastily. He said that maintaining composure and focusing on national interest had ultimately led to a favourable outcome.

“Earlier, there was criticism over tariffs, but we stayed patient. Today, the results are visible,” the prime minister was quoted as telling party leaders during the closed-door meeting.

According to senior leaders present, Modi highlighted that the agreement has helped create a more supportive environment for Indian exports and reflects India’s growing credibility in global trade discussions. He stressed that trade negotiations often require time and resilience, especially when dealing with major economies.

Message to NDA Leaders on Governance and Elections

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, briefing reporters after the meeting, said the prime minister also used the occasion to caution NDA leaders against complacency. Modi reminded MPs that electoral successes—ranging from national polls to local body elections—were the result of sustained public engagement and people-centric governance.

The prime minister urged party leaders to continue focusing on development work and delivery at the grassroots level, rather than relying on past victories. He reiterated that public trust must be earned continuously through performance and accountability.

    Felicitation for Trade Milestones

During the meeting, NDA leaders felicitated the prime minister for concluding trade agreements with multiple countries over recent years, including the latest understanding with the United States. Party leaders described the India–US deal as a significant step that could boost exports, manufacturing, and employment, particularly under the “Made in India” initiative.

Several senior ministers and alliance leaders attended the meeting, including Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Bhupender Yadav. Leaders from NDA partner parties were also present.

Background of the India–US Trade Announcement

The discussion within the NDA came a day after US President Donald Trump publicly stated that India and the United States had reached a trade agreement following a conversation with Prime Minister Modi. Trump indicated that the tariff reduction was being extended as a gesture of goodwill and respect.

In his first public response to the announcement, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the tariff cut and said it would benefit Indian manufacturers and exporters. He expressed optimism that Indian-made products would become more competitive in the American market as a result of the reduced duties.

    Political Developments in Parliament

Meanwhile, the announcement of the trade deal also triggered sharp reactions in Parliament. The Lok Sabha witnessed disruptions on Tuesday, leading to a brief adjournment, as opposition members demanded greater clarity from the government on the terms of the agreement. Opposition parties alleged that Parliament had not been adequately informed about the details of the deal.

The issue was raised during the ongoing discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, which marks the beginning of the Budget Session. The opposition argued that major international agreements should be discussed transparently in Parliament, while treasury benches maintained that details would be shared at the appropriate time.

    Looking Ahead

While the tariff reduction has been welcomed by industry and markets, experts note that several aspects of the India–US trade understanding are yet to be formally clarified. These include sector-specific implications, timelines for implementation, and the broader impact on imports and exports.

Prime Minister Modi’s remarks to NDA leaders signal the government’s intent to project the deal as part of a larger, long-term economic strategy rather than a short-term political gain. As further details emerge, the agreement is expected to remain a key topic of discussion both within Parliament and among stakeholders across the economy.
