Japan Issues ‘Megaquake’ Alert After 7.6-Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Warning

Japan has issued a rare ‘megaquake’ alert a day after a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori, injuring at least 33 people. The warning, announced by authorities and reported by NHK Japan, cautions that a major aftershock could hit the region in the coming days.

Officials said the alert also includes the possibility of a tsunami along the Pacific coastline between Hokkaido and Chiba Prefecture. Residents have been advised to stay on high alert throughout the week, though no evacuation order has been issued. This is the first time such an alert has been activated since the system was introduced in 2022.

Cabinet member Tsukasa Morikubo said a large quake could potentially occur along the Japan Trench and Kuril Trench near Hokkaido. He urged citizens to prioritise safety, adding that it remains uncertain whether a more powerful tremor will actually strike.

The initial earthquake hit at 11:15 p.m. local time on December 8 at a depth of 54 kilometres. Most injuries were caused by falling objects. In Hachinohe, several people were hurt inside a hotel, while in Tohoku, a man suffered minor injuries when his vehicle fell into a ground cavity.

Following the quake, authorities issued tsunami warnings for Iwate, Hokkaido and Aomori. A 70-centimetre tsunami was recorded at Kuji Port in Iwate, while Hokkaido reported a 50-centimetre wave in Urakawa Town. A 40-centimetre tsunami was also observed at Mutsuogawara Port in Aomori. Around 3,000 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency stated that the risk of an even stronger, magnitude 8-level earthquake has increased slightly. It urged residents in 182 municipalities along the northeastern coastline to review emergency preparedness measures during the coming week.
