Karnataka Plans Meet of Southern Labour Ministers on New Labour Codes

The Karnataka government is preparing to host a meeting of Labour Ministers from all southern States in January to discuss the Centre’s four newly notified Labour Codes. The State is also expected to highlight gaps in the Codes while communicating its objections to the Centre.

The long-pending revision of minimum wages in Karnataka—due since 2022–23—remains unresolved. After issuing a draft notification in April 2025 proposing wages between ₹19,000 and ₹31,000 based on skill and location, the government has received over 40,000 objections, delaying the final notification.

Officials said Labour Ministers from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely to attend the conclave. Karnataka’s Labour Minister is expected to write to the Centre on the issue, while the department awaits a meeting with the Chief Minister regarding the minimum wage decision.
