Second Spell of Snowfall Blankets Uttarakhand’s High-Altitude Regions

High-altitude regions of Uttarakhand experienced a fresh spell of snowfall on Tuesday, marking the second such weather event in the state within a week. The renewed snowfall has once again transformed several mountainous areas into snow-covered landscapes, while the plains continued to witness relatively stable and dry conditions.

According to official updates, intermittent snowfall began late Monday night and continued into Tuesday across key pilgrimage and mountainous regions. Badrinath in Chamoli district recorded steady snowfall, while Kedarnath and surrounding peaks in Rudraprayag district were also covered under fresh layers of snow. The snowfall added to the accumulation from the previous spell earlier this month, significantly increasing snow cover in these high-altitude zones.

In Uttarkashi district, snowfall was reported from the higher reaches, including the prominent Bandarpunch peak and nearby mountain ranges. While snow did not fall continuously across all areas, cloud cover remained dense in several locations. Gangotri and Yamunotri, two of the state’s most important pilgrimage sites, experienced overcast skies and cold conditions throughout the day, indicating the likelihood of further weather activity in the coming hours.

In contrast, Dehradun and other low-lying and plains areas of the state remained dry. Daytime temperatures in these regions were cooler than average but did not see any precipitation. Weather officials noted that this contrast between the plains and the high-altitude regions is typical during winter months, when western disturbances primarily impact the upper Himalayan belt.

This latest snowfall follows a heavier spell recorded on January 23, when many high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand received substantial snow after a prolonged dry period. That earlier snowfall had brought relief to local communities dependent on winter tourism and agriculture, while also replenishing natural water reserves in the form of snowpack. Together, the two spells have resulted in a significant buildup of snow across several mountainous districts.

The accumulation of snow is expected to have mixed implications. On one hand, it enhances the scenic appeal of popular destinations such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, and the surrounding Himalayan regions, which often attract visitors during winter for their landscapes. On the other hand, authorities remain cautious about possible disruptions to road connectivity in higher reaches, especially along routes leading to pilgrimage sites and border areas.

Local administrations have been advised to remain alert and prepared for potential challenges related to traffic movement, essential supplies, and emergency services in snowbound areas. Although no major disruptions were reported at the time of publication, officials indicated that monitoring teams were actively tracking weather developments.

Residents in higher-altitude villages have been urged to take necessary precautions, particularly as temperatures are expected to drop further during the night. Snowfall at these elevations often leads to icy conditions, increasing the risk of slips and travel delays. In previous winters, similar weather patterns have occasionally led to temporary road closures, though no such measures had been announced as of Tuesday afternoon.

Meteorological observers noted that winter precipitation plays a crucial role in sustaining Uttarakhand’s river systems. Snowfall in regions such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri contributes to glacier health and ensures steady water flow during the summer months. The recent spells are therefore being viewed as beneficial from a long-term environmental perspective.

With winter still at its peak, further snowfall cannot be ruled out in the coming days, particularly in areas above higher elevations. Weather agencies are expected to issue updated advisories if conditions change.

Uttarakhand experiences snowfall in its upper Himalayan districts every winter, but the timing and intensity can vary widely from year to year. This season’s snowfall, arriving in multiple spells, has drawn attention from residents, travelers, and officials alike as the state balances natural beauty with logistical preparedness during the colder months.
