Viral Video from Delhi Stadium Sparks Hygiene Questions Over Handling of Leftover Drinks

A short video shared widely on social media this week has triggered debate about food and beverage handling at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The clip, reportedly shot after a match earlier in the tournament, appears to show beverage staff collecting soft drinks from paper cups and pouring the contents into larger bottles, raising questions about hygiene and safety standards at the venue.

    Video Surfaces After Netherlands-Namibia Match

The footage circulated online following a group-stage match between the Netherlands and Namibia on February 10, when spectators were leaving the stadium. In the clip, workers can be seen handling several partially filled cups and transferring the liquid into a larger container, which led many viewers to assume that leftover drinks were being consolidated — and possibly reused. The video quickly gained traction on platforms including X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.

Users posting the video suggested that the soft drinks, including popular brands like Thums Up, were being poured back into bottles to be sold again at future matches, a claim that sparked immediate concern among cricket fans and social media users. “At Arun Jaitley Stadium, the leftover drinks from cups are reportedly being poured back into bottles,” one viewer said in the video, implying that these bottles might be resold.

    Mixed Reactions on Social Platforms

The online reaction has been mixed. A number of people expressed serious hygiene concerns, highlighting that once a drink has been served — even if not consumed completely — it should not be reused due to the risk of contamination, particularly in a crowded public venue. “This is a serious hygiene issue at a stadium with thousands of visitors,” one comment read, urging authorities to investigate the matter.

Others questioned whether the footage actually showed what it was being portrayed as, noting that there is no clear evidence that the liquid was previously consumed or that the bottled drinks were intended for resale. Some observers suggested that the drinks might simply be unsold stock or being handled for disposal, and cautioned against jumping to conclusions based on a short clip without context.

    No Official Confirmation Yet

As of this report, neither the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) — which manages the Arun Jaitley Stadium — nor the International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued an official statement addressing the viral video or its contents. There has also been no public response from the beverage brand mentioned in the posts.

Major sporting venues hosting tournaments like the T20 World Cup are subject to strict health, safety, and hygiene regulations, especially where food and beverages are concerned. Standard practice typically prohibits the reuse of served liquids, and compliance is expected to be monitored by both event organisers and contracted vendors.

    Calls for Clarity and Oversight

The rapid spread of the video online has led to calls from some cricket supporters and concerned citizens for transparency and action from stadium authorities. Many have urged organisers to clarify the situation, explaining exactly what the video depicts and how beverage waste is managed at the venue.

Experts in food safety emphasise that clear communication is important in such situations to prevent misinformation. Without verified details — such as when the video was recorded, who filmed it, and under what circumstances — it remains unclear what exactly is taking place in the footage.

    Stadium Officials Yet to Respond

Attempts to obtain comment from the DDCA and event organisers were not immediately successful at the time of this report. Local health and food safety authorities could potentially be asked to review the matter if concerns about hygienic practices persist among the public.

For now, the claims circulating online remain unverified, and the video has not been independently authenticated by officials. Cricket fans attending upcoming World Cup matches may wish to rely on official stadium announcements and food safety guidance for the latest, confirmed information.
