7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan, Tsunami Waves Strike Northern Coast

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck northern Japan on Monday evening, triggering tsunami waves along the Pacific coastline. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami surges of 40 to 50 cm hit coastal areas including Kuji Port in Iwate, Urakawa in Hokkaido, and Mutsu Ogawara in Aomori. Earlier warnings had indicated waves could reach up to three metres.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 53 km, with its epicentre located 73 km east-northeast of Misawa in northern Japan. Local reports confirmed multiple injuries, including several people hurt at a hotel in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said an emergency task force had been activated to assess damage and coordinate relief efforts, stressing that protecting lives is the government’s top priority. Train services in parts of the region were suspended, and authorities warned that hazardous tsunami waves could affect coastal areas of Japan and Russia within a 1,000 km radius.

Japan, located on the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” experiences nearly 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher. The country last saw a major disaster in 2011 when a 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami caused widespread devastation.
