Amit Shah Counters Priyanka Gandhi Over Vande Mataram Debate in Parliament

Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s criticism regarding the parliamentary discussion on Vande Mataram, saying the national song is not linked to electoral politics and carries significance beyond regional or political boundaries. He stated that questioning the need for such a discussion on its 150th anniversary reflects a misunderstanding of its historical and cultural importance.

Amit Shah said Vande Mataram became a unifying call for freedom fighters across the world and continues to inspire security forces today. He added that restricting the song to two stanzas during Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure was a result of appeasement politics and argued that such decisions contributed to historical divisions. He also accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of suppressing voices that upheld the slogan during the Emergency.

Priyanka Gandhi had earlier alleged that the government was raising the issue with an eye on the upcoming Bengal elections, questioning the need for such a debate while other major national concerns remain unaddressed. She said the government was trying to divert attention from present-day issues by focusing on the past.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge responded in the House by chanting Vande Mataram and reminded the government that the Congress played a major role in popularizing the slogan during the freedom movement. He dismissed Shah’s remarks on Nehru, citing a 1937 Congress Working Committee decision that had unanimously recommended singing only the first two stanzas at official events.

Kharge accused the government of linking the discussion to electoral strategy and said meaningful tribute to the nation would be achieved by addressing people’s issues in Parliament.
