Bangladesh Lynching Case Takes Dark Turn: Police Rule Out Blasphemy, Cite Workplace Dispute

    Dhaka/New Delhi | Dec 23, 2025

Fresh investigations into the brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old factory worker in Bangladesh, have revealed that the lynching initially blamed on religious provocation may have actually stemmed from a workplace dispute, officials and family members have said.

Das was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh on December 18, after which his body was reportedly tied to a tree and set on fire. Early reports suggested the attack was triggered by allegations of blasphemy. However, police and security agencies now say no evidence has been found to support those claims.

    What Investigators Have Found

According to Bangladesh police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), none of the witnesses or digital records examined so far indicate that Das made any religiously offensive remarks. Officials said the accusations appear to have spread through rumours, not facts.

Local police officers confirmed that even online activity linked to Das showed no trace of inflammatory content, further weakening the blasphemy narrative.

    Family Alleges Factory Rivalry

Das’s family says the violence followed tensions at his workplace, a garment factory where he was recently dismissed. Relatives claim he had ongoing disputes with colleagues after applying for a promotion, which allegedly caused friction within the factory.

“He was beaten and thrown out of the workplace,” his brother told local media, adding that Das had apologised when confronted but was still attacked later that night.

Local representatives have echoed these concerns, suggesting the killing was planned rather than spontaneous, driven by labour-related disagreements involving overtime, targets, and internal rivalry.

    Arrests and Official Response

Bangladesh authorities have arrested 12 people in connection with the murder. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement focusing on identifying those who instigated the violence and spread false accusations.

India has expressed strong concern over the incident. The Ministry of External Affairs described the killing as “deeply disturbing” and said it is in close contact with Bangladeshi authorities, urging swift justice and protection of minorities.

    Wider Impact

The incident occurred amid unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which had already triggered protests and instability in parts of Bangladesh. Officials fear misinformation played a key role in escalating violence during this volatile period.
