Centre dismisses ‘snooping’ allegations linked to Sanchar Saathi app in Parliament

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday firmly rejected claims that the government’s Sanchar Saathi mobile application could be used for surveillance, stating in Parliament that such activity was “not possible” under the app’s framework.

Speaking during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha, Scindia said the purpose of Sanchar Saathi is to empower mobile users by giving them tools to safeguard their devices and verify connections linked to their identity.

“The Sanchar Saathi app cannot and will not be used for snooping,” he told the House, emphasising that the initiative aims to help citizens protect themselves from digital fraud.

The remarks come days after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a directive on November 28 requiring all mobile manufacturers to pre-install the app on devices sold in India and also push it to existing users through a software update. The order instructs companies to ensure the app is clearly visible during initial device setup.

    Government clarifies installation is voluntary

Responding to public concerns over whether the app could be removed, the minister reiterated that keeping Sanchar Saathi on a device is optional, and users may delete it at any time.

On Tuesday, Scindia had already clarified through a social media post that the app is part of a “voluntary system,” intended only to support users in preventing cyber fraud and protecting their privacy.

‘Key tool against fraud,’ says MoS Communications

Speaking outside Parliament, Minister of State for Communications Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said Sanchar Saathi is among the most effective tools available to curb rising cases of online fraud.

He highlighted that the portal and app have received strong public engagement, with nearly 20 crore website visits and over 1.4 crore downloads so far. The app is available in multiple Indian languages to ensure accessibility for all sections of society.

He also noted that both Apple and Google have verified the application on their respective app stores. “If people don’t want to use it, they are free to delete it. But the idea behind the app is beneficial, and I urge everyone to try it,” he said.

What the Sanchar Saathi platform offers

Launched in May 2023, Sanchar Saathi allows citizens to:

    • Check mobile numbers issued using their identity documents

    • Report suspicious or fraudulent connections

    • Track lost or stolen mobile phones

    • Access tools designed to reduce cyber-related risks

The mobile application, introduced earlier this year, expands these features to smartphones in an effort to strengthen user security.
