The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is preparing to form the next government in Kerala after registering a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. However, even as celebrations continue across the state, discussions within the party over the selection of the next chief minister have reportedly intensified, with multiple senior leaders emerging as strong contenders for the top post.
According to political observers and party insiders, the race for the chief minister’s chair has largely narrowed down to senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal, VD Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala. The final decision is expected to be taken by the party’s central leadership in New Delhi after consultations with elected legislators and alliance partners.
The UDF secured a commanding mandate in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, winning more than the majority mark comfortably. The Congress itself emerged as the single-largest party within the alliance, strengthening its claim to lead the government after years in opposition.
High Command Yet to Announce Final Decision
Despite the strong electoral performance, the Congress leadership had not officially declared its choice for chief minister till late Sunday evening. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi are understood to be holding consultations with senior state leaders and observers before making an announcement.
Political analysts believe the delay reflects the complexity of balancing organisational leadership, legislative support, public sentiment, and alliance dynamics within the coalition.
Several meetings reportedly took place in New Delhi over the weekend, involving top Congress leadership, Kerala leaders, and party observers assigned to assess the views of newly elected MLAs.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the leadership is attempting to avoid factional tensions and ensure unity before government formation formally begins.
KC Venugopal Emerges as Key Contender
Among the names being discussed prominently is senior Congress leader KC Venugopal, who currently plays a major role in the party’s national organisation.
Venugopal has been serving as the General Secretary (Organisation) of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), a position considered one of the most influential within the party structure. Over the years, he has handled organisational affairs, alliance coordination, disciplinary matters, and election management across multiple states.
Political observers often describe him as one of the closest and most trusted associates of Rahul Gandhi within the Congress leadership framework.
Apart from his national responsibilities, Venugopal also has a long political association with Kerala. He previously served as a legislator from Alappuzha and held ministerial responsibilities in the state government during earlier Congress administrations.
He later moved to national politics and represented Alappuzha in Parliament. During the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre, he served in ministerial roles linked to sectors such as civil aviation and power.
Reports circulating in political circles suggest that a significant number of Congress legislators may be backing Venugopal’s candidature for chief minister. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed by the party.
Observers appointed by the Congress leadership reportedly met legislators individually to understand their preferences before submitting their findings to the party high command.
Photograph of Alleged Internal Document Triggers Speculation
Political speculation further intensified after a photograph circulated in sections of the media appeared to show an internal assessment document allegedly listing the preferences of legislators.
The document reportedly indicated support for Venugopal from several MLAs, including some senior leaders within the state unit. However, Congress observers later dismissed the claims surrounding the document, stating that the reports being circulated were inaccurate or incomplete.
The incident nevertheless added to the growing buzz around the leadership contest and highlighted the intense interest surrounding the decision.
Party leaders have so far attempted to publicly maintain restraint and discipline, urging workers not to engage in open demonstrations supporting individual candidates.
VD Satheesan Gains Support from Grassroots Workers
Another major contender in the race is VD Satheesan, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly before the election.
Satheesan is widely credited with leading the Congress campaign aggressively against the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) government during the election season. His supporters argue that his leadership and organisational efforts at the grassroots played a major role in the UDF’s return to power.
A seasoned politician and multiple-term legislator, Satheesan reportedly enjoys strong support among party workers and sections of the alliance leadership.
In recent days, demonstrations and public gatherings supporting his candidature were reportedly organised in several districts by Congress workers and student groups. Videos and social media posts from supporters demanding that Satheesan be appointed chief minister also circulated widely online.
However, Satheesan appealed for calm and discipline among party workers. In a public message, he reportedly urged supporters not to engage in protests or public pressure tactics that could embarrass the party leadership.
Political analysts believe Satheesan’s image as a visible opposition face during the previous government gives him a strong claim in the leadership contest.
Alliance Arithmetic Could Influence Final Decision
The Congress leadership is also believed to be considering the preferences of alliance partners while making its final decision.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), one of the most influential allies within the UDF, is reportedly seen as favouring Satheesan. Other alliance parties are also expected to play a consultative role before the government is formally constituted.
Although the Congress secured the highest number of seats within the coalition, the UDF’s broader alliance structure remains politically important for long-term stability and coordination.
Political observers note that Kerala politics has historically required careful coalition management, especially within the UDF framework where multiple regional and community-based parties hold influence.
Ramesh Chennithala Remains in the Contest
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala is also being viewed as a serious contender despite intense competition from the other two leaders.
Chennithala is among the most experienced politicians in Kerala Congress politics and has held several major organisational and administrative positions over the decades. He previously served as Kerala Congress president, Leader of Opposition, and state home minister.
Known for his administrative experience and long-standing organisational presence, Chennithala continues to enjoy support from sections of senior party leaders and veteran workers.
Political analysts point out that his leadership during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when the UDF performed strongly in Kerala, remains one of the major highlights of his political career.
However, some observers believe the Congress leadership may also factor in the party’s defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections while evaluating competing leadership claims.
Central Leadership Focused on Unity
Following the election results, senior Congress leaders reportedly held extensive discussions in New Delhi with all key stakeholders from Kerala.
Sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge listened to the views of multiple leaders before moving toward a consensus formula.
Publicly, most Congress leaders have maintained that the final decision rests entirely with the party high command and that all workers would be expected to accept the outcome.
Political observers believe the Congress leadership is trying to prevent factional divisions at a time when the party has regained political momentum in one of its most significant states.
The Kerala result is being viewed by many within the Congress as an important morale booster ahead of future national political battles.
Venugopal’s Non-Participation in Assembly Polls Raises Questions
One factor adding complexity to the discussions is the fact that KC Venugopal did not contest the Assembly elections.
As per constitutional requirements, if chosen chief minister, he would need to secure election to the state legislature within six months through a by-election or another constitutional route.
While political experts describe this as a manageable procedural issue, some party leaders reportedly believe that the chief minister should ideally be selected from among elected MLAs.
This aspect also briefly triggered speculation around other senior leaders, including Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor.
Shashi Tharoor Distances Himself from Speculation
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, whose name surfaced in media discussions as a possible compromise candidate, appeared to dismiss such speculation publicly.
Speaking to reporters, Tharoor reportedly stated that the chief minister should ideally be chosen from among those elected to the Assembly, a remark political observers interpreted as distancing himself from the race.
His statement was also viewed by some analysts as an indirect reference to the debate surrounding Venugopal’s non-participation in the Assembly polls.
Despite the speculation, the leadership battle continues to revolve mainly around Venugopal, Satheesan, and Chennithala.
Government Formation Expected Soon
With the constitutional timeline for government formation approaching, the Congress leadership is expected to announce its final decision shortly.
Party insiders say the leadership’s priority is to ensure a smooth transition of power while maintaining unity within the alliance and preventing internal divisions from overshadowing the electoral victory.
