Kerala Actor Maniyanpillai Raju Booked in Late-Night Hit-and-Run Case in Thiruvananthapuram

Veteran Malayalam actor and film producer Maniyanpillai Raju has been booked by the Kerala Police in connection with a hit-and-run incident reported from Thiruvananthapuram city, in which two young men riding a motorcycle sustained injuries. The accident took place late on Thursday night in the Vazhuthacaud area, close to the Trivandrum Club, a busy stretch known for steady vehicular movement even after evening hours.

According to police officials attached to the Museum Police Station, a case has been registered against the actor for alleged rash and negligent driving, as well as for failing to ensure immediate medical assistance to the injured persons. The investigation is currently at a preliminary stage, and further action will be based on findings gathered during the inquiry.

    Details of the Incident

The accident occurred at around 10 p.m. when a car allegedly driven by Maniyanpillai Raju collided with a motorcycle carrying two youths. The impact reportedly caused the riders to fall onto the road, resulting in injuries that required medical attention.

The injured individuals have been identified as Nivedith Krishna and Suraj, both residents of Thiruvananthapuram. Police sources stated that the two were conscious after the accident and were later shifted to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries are said to be non-fatal, though doctors are continuing to monitor their condition.

Eyewitness accounts collected by the police suggest that the car involved in the accident did not stop immediately after the collision. Based on these statements, the incident is being treated as a suspected hit-and-run case.

    Police Action and Legal Provisions

Following a complaint, the Museum police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act. The charges pertain to driving in a manner endangering public safety and failing to extend assistance to accident victims, which is a legal obligation under Indian law.

A senior police officer said that statements from the injured riders, eyewitnesses, and other relevant parties are being recorded. “We are examining all aspects of the incident, including vehicle movement, road conditions, and CCTV footage from nearby establishments. Responsibility will be determined based on evidence,” the officer said.

The car involved in the accident has reportedly been identified, and technical inspection may be carried out as part of the investigation.

    Actor Appears Before Police

On Friday morning, Maniyanpillai Raju was seen at the Museum Police Station in connection with the case. Sources indicated that the actor cooperated with the police and provided his version of events. Officials clarified that appearing before the police does not imply guilt and is part of the standard legal process.

There has been no official statement from the actor or his representatives at the time of publishing this report.

Public Reaction and Road Safety Concerns

The incident has sparked discussion in the city about road safety and accountability, particularly when public figures are involved. Local residents and road safety advocates have pointed out that hit-and-run cases remain a persistent problem in urban Kerala, despite awareness campaigns and stricter laws.

“Every driver, irrespective of status, is expected to follow traffic rules and ensure help for the injured in case of an accident,” said a local road safety activist. “Immediate medical assistance can save lives.”

Kerala has witnessed a steady rise in road accidents over recent years, with authorities repeatedly urging motorists to exercise caution, especially during late-night hours when visibility is reduced and traffic monitoring is relatively low.

    Investigation Ongoing

Police have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions should not be drawn prematurely. Officials are verifying timelines, reviewing surveillance footage from the area around the Trivandrum Club, and assessing whether any mitigating factors were involved.

Further legal steps, including the filing of a detailed charge sheet, will depend on the outcome of the investigation and medical reports of the injured youths.

As the case progresses, authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that due process is followed and that accountability is fixed strictly on the basis of evidence, in line with the law.
