Uncovered Road Pit Claims Life of Young Biker in West Delhi, Family Alleges Delay in Police Response

A 25-year-old man lost his life in a late-night road accident in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area after his motorcycle reportedly slipped into an uncovered pit dug for ongoing construction work, raising serious questions about road safety measures and coordination among civic and enforcement agencies.

According to police officials, the incident occurred on Joginder Singh Marg, near a residential complex in the Janakpuri locality, where roadwork was underway. Preliminary findings suggest that a pit had been excavated as part of the construction activity and was left without adequate barricading, lighting, or warning signage, making it difficult for commuters to spot the hazard, especially at night.

Victim Was Returning Home from Work

The victim, who worked in the private sector, was returning home after office hours when the accident is believed to have taken place. Family members said he left home on his motorcycle late in the evening and failed to return. When repeated attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful and his device appeared unreachable, relatives grew concerned and began searching for him.

Over the course of the night, the family visited multiple police stations across West Delhi in an attempt to trace his whereabouts. They alleged that despite approaching several police units, they did not receive clear or timely information about what had happened.

“We were told at different places that no such case had been reported. We kept moving from one police station to another throughout the night,” a family member said, requesting anonymity. The family claimed they were informed about the discovery of the body only the following morning.

    Body Found Near Construction Site

Police officials confirmed that the man’s body was located early in the morning at the accident site. Initial assessment indicated that the motorcycle had veered into the pit, leading to severe injuries. The absence of visible safety barriers or caution boards at the location is believed to have contributed to the accident.

Local residents also reported that the stretch had posed risks for commuters for several days due to the ongoing construction work. “There were no clear warnings at night. Anyone unfamiliar with the road could easily miss the pit,” a nearby resident said.

    Allegations of Negligence

The victim’s family has alleged negligence on the part of the agencies responsible for the construction work and road safety. They have demanded strict action against those who failed to ensure proper safety arrangements at the site.

“This could have been avoided if basic precautions were taken. No family should have to go through such an ordeal because of careless planning,” another relative said.

Civic activists echoed similar concerns, pointing out that uncovered pits and poorly marked construction zones have been a recurring issue in several parts of the capital. They have called for stricter enforcement of safety norms and accountability for contractors and departments involved in roadwork.

    Police Investigation Underway

Police officials stated that a case has been registered and an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events. Authorities are examining whether standard safety protocols were violated and which agency or contractor was responsible for the excavation.

“We are collecting evidence from the site and speaking to relevant departments involved in the construction work. Responsibility will be fixed after the inquiry,” a senior police officer said.

The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas to establish the timeline of the incident and confirm the circumstances under which the motorcycle entered the pit.

    Broader Road Safety Concerns

The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of urban road safety in Delhi, particularly during night hours. Experts note that inadequate lighting, poor signage, and lack of coordination between civic bodies and traffic authorities often create dangerous conditions for motorists.

As Delhi continues to undergo extensive infrastructure development, residents and safety advocates are urging authorities to ensure that construction activities do not compromise public safety. They stress the need for clear warning signs, proper barricading, reflective markers, and regular monitoring of work sites.

For the bereaved family, however, the focus remains on accountability and preventing similar incidents in the future. “Nothing can bring him back, but we hope action is taken so that no one else suffers like this,” a family member said.

Further developments are expected as the investigation progresses and responsibility for the lapse is determined.
