    A tragic incident in Noida’s Sector 150 has raised serious questions about civic safety and emergency response after a 27-year-old software professional lost his life hours after his car accidentally fell into a deep roadside drain during the early hours of Saturday.

    The victim, identified as Yuvraj Mehta, was returning home late at night when his vehicle plunged into a nearly 70-foot-deep drain around 12:30 a.m. Preliminary accounts suggest that poor visibility due to dense fog and the absence of proper barricading near the drain may have contributed to the accident.

    Accident in Low Visibility Conditions

    According to the family, the boundary wall near the drain was already damaged and lacked reflective markers or warning signs. Yuvraj’s father, Raj Mehta, stated in a written complaint that residents of the area had earlier flagged safety concerns and requested protective measures from the local authority, but no effective action was taken.

    After the car fell into the drain, Yuvraj reportedly managed to exit the vehicle and climb onto its roof, which was partially above the water level. From there, he contacted his father and remained on the phone while awaiting help.

    Delay in Rescue Efforts Alleged

    Family members and friends present at the site have alleged that rescue efforts were delayed despite police personnel reaching the location. A close friend of the victim said that Yuvraj continued calling for help for nearly two hours while standing in the cold water, gradually losing strength.

    The friend claimed that while emergency services were informed, no immediate attempt was made to enter the drain due to concerns about water conditions and safety risks. Equipment such as ropes and cranes were brought to the site, but active rescue efforts reportedly began much later.

    A passerby, who attempted to assist independently, entered the drain at around 1:45 a.m. but was unable to locate Yuvraj during a brief search. By around 2:30 a.m., calls from the victim reportedly stopped, raising fears about his condition.

    Official Response from Authorities

    Police officials said they received information about the incident around 1 a.m. through a police response vehicle and immediately alerted the fire department, along with specialised rescue teams. However, officials acknowledged that low visibility, fog, and the depth of the drain made rescue operations difficult.

    According to police, teams from disaster response agencies reached the site later in the night and entered the water after assessing safety conditions. By that time, the victim could no longer be located. His body was eventually recovered around 6:30 a.m. after prolonged search efforts.

    Authorities confirmed that while no formal case has been registered so far, a detailed report will be sent to the Noida Authority highlighting the circumstances surrounding the incident and the safety concerns at the location.

    Civic Safety Concerns Resurface

    The incident has once again drawn attention to infrastructure safety in rapidly developing urban areas of the National Capital Region. Local residents allege that open drains, broken barriers, and lack of reflective signage pose a recurring danger, especially during winter months when fog severely reduces visibility.

    Yuvraj Mehta, who worked with a private firm in Gurugram, lived with his father and was the sole earning member of his family. He had lost his mother two years ago. Friends described him as responsible and hardworking, with no history of risky driving.

    Calls for Accountability and Preventive Action

    The family has demanded accountability from civic authorities and urged immediate corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Residents of Sector 150 have reiterated their demand for proper barricading, lighting, and regular safety audits near open drains and construction zones.

    Despite repeated attempts, officials from the Noida Authority were unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report.

     

    As investigations continue, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of basic urban safety measures and timely emergency response, particularly in high-risk zones. The outcome of official reviews and administrative action will be closely watched by residents and civic groups across the region.
