    Seven Security Personnel Injured in Encounter During Counter-Insurgency Operation in Jammu and Kashmir

    Seven security personnel were injured during an encounter with suspected militants in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. The incident occurred during a joint search operation being carried out in a remote and challenging terrain as part of heightened security measures in the region.

    According to official sources, the exchange of fire took place in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar when security forces came in contact with armed individuals during a planned search exercise. The operation, launched around noon, is part of an ongoing counter-insurgency drive in the Jammu region and has been designated by the Indian Army as Operation Trashi-I.

    Encounter During Search Operation

    Security officials said that troops from the Army, working in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, were conducting a deliberate search in the general area of Sonnar, located northeast of Chatroo, when they were fired upon. The forces responded in a controlled manner and managed to secure the area while ensuring that the injured personnel were evacuated promptly.

    “All injured soldiers were shifted to a medical facility for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable,” a senior official said, adding that the operation is still underway.

    In a statement shared by the Army’s Jammu-based formation, officials said additional forces have been deployed to strengthen the cordon around the area. Advanced surveillance tools, including unmanned aerial vehicles and tracking dogs, are being used to monitor movement and prevent any breach.

    Terrain and Weather Pose Challenges

    Officials familiar with the operation said the area is characterised by dense forest cover, steep slopes and limited accessibility, which has made movement and visibility difficult. These conditions, they added, often complicate both search operations and evacuation efforts.

    Security agencies said that despite the difficult terrain, coordination between the Army, police and other central forces remained effective throughout the operation. Civil administration teams have also been kept on standby to assist if required.

    Pattern of Recent Incidents

    This is the third such encounter reported in the Jammu region this year. Earlier this month, similar exchanges were reported in forested areas of Kathua district, where security forces were conducting operations based on specific intelligence inputs.

    Officials said that security activities have been intensified since December following indications that armed groups may be attempting to move through forest corridors in the region. A large-scale operation was launched late last year to locate and neutralise individuals suspected of being active in these areas.

    In one such incident in December, a police officer lost his life during an encounter in Udhampur district. Following that, security agencies reviewed their deployment strategy and increased patrols in sensitive zones.

    Heightened Vigil Ahead of National Events

    Authorities said that security measures across Jammu and Kashmir have been further tightened in the run-up to Republic Day celebrations. Additional checkpoints, area domination patrols and intelligence-based operations are being carried out to ensure normalcy and public safety.

    “Security agencies are maintaining a high level of alertness, particularly in border and hinterland areas, to prevent any disruption during national events,” an official said.

    While officials refrained from sharing further operational details, they confirmed that search efforts would continue until the area is fully sanitised. Residents in nearby villages have been advised to remain cautious and cooperate with security personnel.

    Focus on Safety and Stability

    Senior officials reiterated that the primary objective of such operations is to maintain peace and protect civilians while ensuring the safety of security personnel. They also emphasised that restraint and standard operating procedures are followed during all engagements.

    “The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be shared as the operation progresses,” an official spokesperson said.

    The incident once again highlights the complexities of maintaining security in difficult terrain while balancing operational requirements with civilian safety. Further information is expected once the ongoing operation concludes.
