Prithviraj Chavan Stands Firm on ‘Operation Sindoor’ Remark, Triggers Political Row

Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has refused to withdraw or apologise for his controversial remarks on Operation Sindoor, stating that he believes he has done nothing wrong. His comments have sparked sharp political reactions, particularly from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has accused the Congress of undermining the armed forces.

Speaking in New Delhi on Wednesday, Mr. Chavan said he would not issue an apology for his statement that India was “defeated on the first day” of Operation Sindoor, a military engagement with Pakistan earlier this year. He reiterated that his remarks were based on his understanding of events and insisted there was no reason for him to express regret.

The controversy began after Mr. Chavan, addressing a public event in Pune, claimed that Indian military aircraft were shot down by Pakistani forces on the opening day of the operation. He also stated that the Indian Air Force had been rendered inactive for a period following the initial exchanges. These remarks drew immediate criticism from BJP leaders, who described them as misleading and damaging to national morale.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress leadership of tolerating statements that, according to him, disrespect the armed forces. He alleged that such remarks reflected a broader mindset within the party and questioned why disciplinary action had not been taken against Mr. Chavan. Other BJP leaders echoed similar sentiments, with Union Minister Giriraj Singh stating that questioning the valour of the armed forces was unacceptable and against national interest.

Several BJP parliamentarians also weighed in, accusing the Congress of repeatedly making statements that, in their view, align with Pakistan’s narrative. They argued that such comments undermine the achievements of the Indian military and weaken India’s position internationally.

The Congress, meanwhile, sought to distance itself from Mr. Chavan’s remarks. Party leaders clarified that his views were personal and did not reflect the official stance of the organisation. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said the party remained proud of the armed forces and continued to support the government in matters related to national security and counter-terrorism. Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari also praised the Army’s strength and capabilities, while making a broader political comparison with past leadership.

Operation Sindoor was launched by India following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. During the operation, Indian forces carried out precision strikes on multiple terror facilities located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Indian officials have said the strikes significantly damaged militant infrastructure and were followed by attempted retaliatory attacks from Pakistan using drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted by India’s air defence systems.

Pakistan has claimed it shot down several Indian aircraft during the conflict, including advanced fighter jets, but Indian authorities have rejected these claims, calling them unsubstantiated. Senior Indian Air Force officials have maintained that the operation met its objectives and that reports of Indian aircraft losses were part of disinformation efforts.

The political debate surrounding Mr. Chavan’s remarks is expected to continue in Parliament, with both sides using the issue to press their respective narratives on national security and political responsibility.
