Sri Lanka Declares Emergency as Cyclone Ditwah Toll Climbs to 153

    Colombo | November 29, 2025 — Yugcharan News

Sri Lanka has declared a nationwide state of Emergency after Cyclone Ditwah triggered widespread floods and landslips, leaving at least 153 people dead and nearly two hundred missing, according to officials on Saturday.

The Disaster Management Centre reported that more than half a million residents across the island have been affected, with over 78,000 people relocated to nearly 800 relief camps set up mainly in schools.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake approved the Emergency declaration as rescue efforts intensified across the worst-hit regions. Thousands of personnel from the police, navy and army have been deployed to deliver food, clear blocked routes and assist families stranded by rising waters.

    Worst flooding in years

Several low-lying areas near Colombo, including Malwana, remain heavily flooded. Many homes are without power, and rescue boats are continuing to move people to safer locations. Residents who reached relief centres described how water levels rose unexpectedly, giving them little time to gather belongings.

Local businesses, including pharmacies and shops, have suffered extensive damage, raising concerns about long-term recovery.

Volunteers at community centres and places of worship are preparing meals for displaced families, with organisers noting a growing demand for food and essential supplies as daily workers struggle without income.

    India sends emergency assistance

Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India has sent multiple consignments of relief materials. On Saturday, two military transport aircraft delivered around 21 tonnes of supplies, in addition to more than six tonnes sent earlier. India has also deployed search and rescue teams and helicopters from INS Vikrant to support ongoing operations.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo has opened an emergency helpdesk at Bandaranaike International Airport to assist Indian travellers affected by flight disruptions. Support including food and water is being provided to passengers stranded at the airport.

Authorities have warned of continued rainfall through the weekend, raising concerns about further flooding in regions that are already waterlogged.
