Thai PM Admits Shortcomings in Flood Response as Toll Reaches 162

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Saturday acknowledged gaps in the government’s response to the severe flooding that has devastated the country’s southern provinces, where at least 162 people have lost their lives.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, more than 3.8 million residents across 1.4 million households have been affected by days of heavy rain that inundated 12 southern provinces. Songkhla has reported the highest casualties.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat said rescue teams are still working in several areas, and the toll rose as officials reached neighbourhoods that were previously inaccessible.

Facing criticism over the scale of destruction, Mr. Charnvirakul said during a media briefing that he had apologised to affected communities during his field visits. He confirmed that compensation payments would begin next week, along with additional relief measures including temporary debt suspension and interest-free loans for households and small businesses.

Authorities reported that water levels had begun receding across all affected provinces on Saturday morning. Visuals from local areas showed residents returning to examine damaged homes, where belongings and furniture were scattered after days of flooding.

The Prime Minister’s Office also announced that King Maha Vajiralongkorn would extend financial support, including a 100-million-baht donation to Hat Yai Hospital, which suffered significant damage, and assistance for the funerals of those who died in the disaster.
