The V. O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Thoothukudi has received its first shipment of clinker under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Ambuja Cement Limited, Gujarat. The arrangement is part of the port’s Minimum Guaranteed Tonnage-based Incentive Scheme aimed at boosting coastal cargo movement.

Under the MoU, Ambuja Cement will transport 2,50,000 metric tonnes of clinker annually through coastal routes. Port authorities said the arrival of the first vessel marks the beginning of a long-term cargo partnership expected to enhance port operations and support domestic maritime logistics.

Officials added that the initiative aligns with efforts to promote coastal shipping as a cost-efficient and environmentally favorable alternative to road transport.
