Thailand Reports First Civilian D*ath as Border Clashes With Cambodia Intensify

Thailand has confirmed its first civilian fatality since fresh fighting erupted along its disputed border with Cambodia, after a rocket strike reportedly fired from across the frontier hit a residential area on Sunday. The victim, a 63-year-old villager identified as Don Patchapan, was killed in Kantharalak district of Sisaket province, close to a school, according to Thai authorities.

The Thai government said the attack marked a serious escalation in the week-long conflict, which began after a clash on December 7 injured two Thai soldiers. Since then, both sides have engaged in sustained military action over contested border territories, some of which are home to ancient temple complexes claimed by both nations.

Journalists who reached the impact site shortly after the strike described scenes of destruction, including a house set ablaze and rocket fragments embedded in nearby roads. Thai officials accused Cambodia of deliberately targeting civilian areas, calling the attack inhumane. Cambodia, however, has not directly responded to the allegation.

The fighting has already taken a heavy toll. Authorities say more than two dozen people have been killed on both sides, while over half a million residents have been forced to flee their homes. Thailand claims at least 15 of its soldiers have died, while estimating over 200 Cambodian military casualties — figures Phnom Penh has rejected as false. Cambodia has acknowledged civilian deaths but has not confirmed military losses.

The conflict has also derailed renewed ceasefire efforts. A truce earlier promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump, with support from Malaysia, briefly halted fighting in mid-year but has since collapsed. Although Mr. Trump announced last week that both sides had agreed to revive the ceasefire, Thailand denied making such a commitment, while Cambodia said it would continue military action in self-defence.

As hostilities expand — including airstrikes by Thailand, rocket fire by Cambodia, and even naval exchanges in coastal areas — regional concerns are growing over the risk of prolonged instability in Southeast Asia.
