Thousands Rally in Manila Over Alleged Flood Control Irregularities

Thousands of citizens gathered in the Philippine capital on Sunday, calling for greater transparency and accountability in connection with a large-scale infrastructure controversy involving flood control projects.

The demonstrations come after months of public concern over allegations that several flood management works were approved but never completed, even as powerful typhoons have left many towns submerged in recent months. The Philippines, home to more than 116 million people, has faced repeated flooding that has damaged homes and displaced communities.

Protesters marched along the historic EDSA stretch toward the People Power Monument, carrying signs and voicing demands for swift action. Participants also assembled at Luneta Park, near the presidential palace, where many held placards shaped like crocodiles, symbolising their frustration with financial misuse.

Several demonstrators expressed grief over the lives affected by recent disasters, emphasising that delayed or abandoned flood projects have deepened the impact of seasonal storms. Among those who joined the rally were youth groups, community leaders, and families who said they were inspired by calls circulated on social media.

Authorities recently announced the first arrests related to the case, involving eight personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways. Officials have indicated that further actions may follow as the investigation progresses.

Despite these developments, some participants said they remain concerned about the broader accountability process, noting that major decisions often involve multiple levels of leadership.

To ensure public safety, more than 17,000 police officers were deployed across the capital. The demonstrations remained largely peaceful, though previous rallies earlier this year had seen tensions between security personnel and protesters.

The Philippines has experienced several high-profile financial controversies over the years, and many at Sunday’s gathering said they hope ongoing inquiries will help strengthen public trust in major development projects.
